Breakdown

THE NIGHT ALIVE by Conor McPherson
Director - Randall Arney

The play takes place in Dublin. The men are loners, barely getting by and banking on a succession of odd jobs and get-rich-quick schemes. Until one day Tommy defends a destitute stranger against a violent attack then shelters and protects her with the little he has. Full of humor, this play finds humanity among the ashes.
Maurice – 70s, he owns the ramshackle house where this story takes place and lives upstairs, still, he struggles with money. His wife slipped on the ice and died three years ago, he blames himself and is making do the best he can on his own. He’s afraid of dying. He rents a room to Tommy, his nephew, and suspects him of stealing from him in many little ways, and he’s not wrong about that. He has an Irish dialect.

Tommy – 50s, middle-aged and well worn, he is separated from his wife and children. He lives off odd jobs and in squalor. He does have dreams of moving out of Dublin, but for now he is tied to this place, until he can scrape up enough money. In spite of himself, he does take care of those around him. He is a vulnerable and a good man. He has an Irish dialect.

Aimee – 20s, skinny, well worn, as the play begins she has been beaten up. She has almost lost the energy to go on. Sometimes a prostitute. She has an Irish dialect.

Doc – 40s, long time friend and now Tommy hires him to help with the odd jobs he does to make a living. Tommy describes him as disabled – 5 to 10 minutes behind everyone else. He is a good and loyal friend. There is ample opportunity for humor in this role. He has an Irish dialect.

Kenneth – late 30’s, slim and powerful. Aimee’s ex- boyfriend, he has been living with her and her mother, but now the mother is dead and Aimee has received no inheritance. He depends on the money she brings in. He is volatile and dangerous. He has an Irish dialect.
