BREAKDOWN
The play takes place in England over the course of six years
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES AND UNDERSTUDIES:
HILARY MATTHEWS – 20’s. English. Intensely smart, sensitive, compassionate, thoughtful, articulate and full of feeling. We meet her first when she is graduating from a local university with a degree in psychology and later as a research scientist. Confident, questioning, an independent and original thinker who believes in the inherent goodness of human beings. A person of moral substance, who is trying to reconcile the scientific world with the spiritual world and trying to reconcile her past with her present. Undeniably attractive, vibrant, with a quiet charisma, everyone is drawn to her.
SPIKE – 30’s. English. We meet him first as Hilary’s university tutor and lover. A research scientist with confidence and ambition. Smart, sexy, articulate with real bad boy tendencies, he’s in love with Hillary, although he wouldn’t admit it. Comfortable in his skin. Confident in his view of the world and of his assessment of human behavior in purely scientific terms.
JERRY KROHL– 40’s. American. A mega-wealthy hedge funder, living in the UK, he’s created the Krohl Institute for Brain Science, a think tank and research institute to study the brain and human behavior. Magnanimous, gracious, charming, because he can be, he’s comfortable with his own power. A kind and caring father to CATHY, he’s a ruthless in business.
LEO REINHART – E40’s – E50’s. English. A research scientist, he runs the psychology department at the Krohl Institute. Brilliant, but in an understated way. Authoritative, but in an understated way. Attractive, but in an understated way. He’s a scientist and a true intellectual, with a hunger for understanding. In love with Hilary.
AMAL ADMATI– 20’S – E30’S. Indian. A Cambridge educated mathematician and biophysicist, now studying neurobiology, we first meet him while he is competing with Hillary for the same research position at the Krohl institute. He’s brilliant and he knows it, but he’s not terribly adept socially. Ambitious, articulate, with an acutely logical mind, he lacks imagination.
DR. URSULA TARRANT – L30’s – M40’s. English. A Research neuroscientist at the Krohl institute. Articulate, whip smart, capable, authoritative, very direct, with a good sense of humor.
JULIA CHAMBERLIN – 20’S. English. URSULA’S girlfriend, as a Pilates Instructor for the staff of the Krohl Institute. Warm, present, kind. Knows Hilary from high school.
BO SHENG-TSU – M 20’s. Chinese-American. A scientist, born and raised in China, with degrees from Caltech and Cambridge, now living in London. Intensely smart, hardworking, eager to please, in awe of and in love with Hilary.
