Breakdown

NOTE FOR ALL CHARACTERS: The play is a satire and requires actors who can be very funny and very real at the same time.

ANNA:
Female, Caucasian or Latina, 35-40. A successful journalist who is beautiful, graceful, and smart, but she is also a hopeless know-it-all. She is charming when she’s in control, but when she’s crossed she’ll either lash out or start crying. Either is actually pretty funny to watch.

ROB:
Male, Caucasian , 35-40. Anna’s golden boy handsome and charismatic husband who is just starting to ask any real questions in his life. Former college athlete from an upper crust background, Rob is someone for whom life has been easy and who is now either very naïve at 40 or just dumb. It’s hard to tell. Double cast as SAM, a WalMart manger.

WILL:
Male, Caucasian or Asian, 35-40, Conservative, well groomed and straight laced history scholar who is stunned to realize late in the play (very comically) that he is gay. He begins to dress and act accordingly, to hilarious effect. Double cast as FRANK, a secret service agent.

JEN:
Female, Caucasian, 35-40. Pretty in a bookish way, she is a disheveled mess who is oblivious to her own attractiveness. She is also horribly shy and insecure except when she unexpectedly bursts out with awkwardly true comments about those around her. Double cast as ELSA, a jaded Literary agent.

LILY:
Female, African American, 25-35. Rising star journalist. A go-getter, former debate captain who is on the cusp of all trends but can still put her foot in her mouth in social occasions. Despite her overblown ambition we like her a lot. Double cast a Mrs. Simpson, a retired librarian.
