Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for these dance calls, and bring your tap shoes if you want to participate in the tap call. Please bring headshot and resume STAPLED TOGETHER.

ALICE MURPHY: Female, 34-39: to play Alice at age 38--an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional--but with an air of melancholy. The same actress will also play Young Alice at age 16--rebellious, high-spirited, sexually forward, adventurous--looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. Must be very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles. ROLE ON OFFER.

BILLY CANE: Male, 22: a soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve.

JIMMY RAY DOBBS: Male, 30-35: will play Jimmy Ray in his early 20s in flashbacks--Mayor Dobbs' son and young Alice's beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built, and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion. The same actor will also play an adult Jimmy Ray at age 40.

MAYOR JOSIAH DOBBS: Male, 56-67: the Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker--distinguished, even elegant, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son's future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty.

MARGO CRAWFORD: Female, 22: a small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy's who now harbors romantic feelings towards him; a natural beauty with a keen intellect. ROLE ON OFFER.

DADDY MURPHY: Male, 56-67: Alice's father; an authoritative and a stern disciplinarian; devoutly religious, hard-working, a poor but proud farmer.

MAMA MURPHY: Female, 50-64

DARYL AMES: Male, 26-39

LUCY GRANT: Female, 20-30

POLLY BAKER: Nevada postmistress. Late 20s. “All American Girl”, Country Girl. Belt with a smooth mix on ballads. A?below middle C to the E? an octave above it. MUST be an exceptional dancer, tap and jazz. Principal role. ROLE ON OFFER.

BELA ZANGLER: An established producer. 50s. Character Baritone. Sings up to an F. Speaks with a Hungarian accent. Principal role. ROLE ON OFFER.

LANK HAWKINS: Saloon proprietor. 40s. Comic character. Lanky. Moves well. Essentially a non-singer. Medium three not range for one solo line. Principal role. ROLE ON OFFER.

IRENE ROTH: A New York Society debutant. Upper Class. Caustic Wit. Alto/Mezzo, A?below middle C to the B?above it. Must move well. Principal role. ROLE ON OFFER.

EVERETT BAKER: Polly’s father. 60s/70s. Charming, dear. Character Bass or Baritone, one octave: D?below middle C to the D?above it. Principal role.

EUGENE FODOR: An English tourist. An adventurous Brit. Positive. Curious. Character Baritone. D below middle C to the F above it. Principal role.

PATRICIA FODOR: Eugene’s wife. An adventurous Brit. Positive. Curious. Female Character voice. E?above middle C to the F and octave above it. Principal role.

LOTTIE CHILD: Bobby’s business oriented and controlling parent. 60s/ 70s. Upper Class. Rich. Comic Sting. Sarcastic. No solo lines. Principal role.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE/ TESS: 20s – 30s. Dance Director of the Zangler Follies and Zangler’s favorite. Seeking an excellent singer with good comedic timing. Belter, up to the E? an octave above middle C. Must dance and tap very well. 5’9” – 6’0”. ROLE ON OFFER.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE/ PATSY: 20s – 30s. Squeaky-voiced Showgirl. Not the brightest girl. Seeking a strong singer who dances and taps very well. Belter, up to the E? an octave above middle C. Not as heavy of a sound as ‘Tess’. Must be 5’7” or over. ROLE ON OFFER.

FEMALE ENSEMBLE/ SHOWGIRLS: 20s – 30s. Seeking strong dancers/tappers who sing well. Looking for wide variety of good singers who can hold tight harmonies. Sopranos must sing up to a B?. Must be 5’ 7” or taller.

MALE ENSEMBLE/ MOOSE: 20s – 40s. Featured ensemble. Member of the Cowboy Trio. Seeking a strong singer who plays the Upright Bass. Should be a Bass or sing the lower voice in three part harmonies. Must be 6’0” or over.

MALE ENSEMBLE/ SAM: 30s. Featured ensemble. Member of the Cowboy Trio. Seeking a strong singer who plays the guitar. Should be able to sing the middle or top in three part harmonies. Must dance and tap very well.

MALE ENSEMBLE/ ACROBATS: 20s – Late 30s. Seeking strong dancers/tappers who sing well. Must have acrobatic abilities, including round off, back handspring and Russian.

MALE ENSEMBLE: 20s – Late 30s. Seeking strong dancers/ tappers who sing well. Looking for wide variety of good singers who can hold tight harmonies. Tenors must sing up to a B?.
