BREAKDOWN

Tantrum Theater opened in summer of 2016, and is pleased to announce its 2017 season. The company was founded as a professional company in residence at Ohio University in partnership with the City of Dublin and Dublin Arts Council. Season rehearses at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and performs at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ohio.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
Playwright: William Shakespeare
Director: Daniel C. Dennis
1st Rehearsal: 5/9/2017
First preview: 5/30
Closes: 6/17

Seeking experienced and skilled speakers of Shakespearean verse with a sense of innate musicality that are willing to make bold physical and emotional choices. None of the roles are pre-cast. Roles not listed below will go to college student apprentices, and the fairies will be played by local children. All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities. We are particularly interested in an ethnically diverse cast.

THESEUS/OBERON
male, 40s – 60s. Any ethnicity. Actor plays both Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Oberon, King of the Fairies. These are two of sides of one coin: Theseus is a (mostly) fair and politic leader, while Oberon is dangerously driven by fancy, passion, and love.

HYPPOLYTA/TITANIA
Female, 40s – 60s. Any ethnicity. Actor plays both Hyppolyta, conquered Queen of the Amazons, and Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Hyppolyta, though conquered, is proud and strong. Titania is elemental female: mother, destroyer, and lover.

EGEUS/PUCK
Female, any age. Any ethnicity. Physically daring, relentlessly imaginative - to play both Egeus, father of Hermia, and Puck, mischievous fairy creature and right hand of Oberon. Both characters are witty, acerbic, and bold enough to get themselves in trouble. Puck, in particular, is irrepressible.

PETER QUINCE
Female or male, any age. Any ethnicity. Fastidious, rule-following manager of the rude mechanicals.

NICK BOTTOM
Male, any age. Any ethnicity. The commanding and cheerful star of the amateur acting troupe. Extremely well-intentioned and absolutely sure of himself, if there is any mansplaining to be done, you can be sure Nick Bottom will do it.

DEMETRIUS
Male, 20s. Any ethnicity. Egeus’s privileged pick for his daughter Hermia. He is headstrong, handsome, and sure of himself. But he might also be gay and in denial. He doesn’t know, until he knows.

HELENUS
Male, 20s. Any ethnicity. The spurned lover of Demetrius and best friend of Hermia, formerly known as Helena. This traditionally female role is, in this production, a gay male character. Very handsome, funny, devoted, witty, sarcastic, and normally so fun to be around, except now that he is heartbroken.

[HERMIA] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[LYSANDER] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[PHILOSTRATE/LEAD FAIRY] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[FLUTE] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[SNUG] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[SNOUT] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[STARVELING] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

[FAIRIES] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
Book/Lyrics: Tony Kushner
Music: Jeanine Tesori
Director: Robert Barry Fleming

1st rehearsal: 6/6/2017
First preview: 7/5
Closes: 7/22

Seeking excellent singing actors with a strong sense of melody, rhythm, and stage presence for this challenging musical, about African-American and Jewish cultures coming together in the most ordinary of circumstances in Louisiana at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. None of the roles are pre-cast. The roles not listed below (the remaining two Radio roles and Caroline’s daughter Emmie) will go to two college student apprentices.

CAROLINE THIBODEAUX
Female, 35 - 45, African-American. Caroline is the long-suffering housemaid to the Gellman family. She is divorced, and the protective mother of four children. Resistant to change, she is tired and bitter. This is a commanding and difficult leading role for all the feeling that Caroline must contain until it is finally released at the end. Vocal range: E3 – E5.

THE WASHING MACHINE / THE MOON
Female, 20s – 60s, African-American. Both of these roles serve as narrator and friend to and subconscious of Caroline. The actor playing these roles should have a rich, motherly voice. Vocal range: G3 – A5.

DOTTY MOFFETT / THE RADIO
Female, 25 - 35, African-American. Caroline’s fun-loving friend and fellow maid, Dotty drinks, smokes, likes to have a good time, and is looked down upon by Caroline for doing so. The actor who plays Dotty will also serve as one of three actors who sing the Radio, narrating the story and acting as confidant to and subconscious of Caroline. Vocal range: F3 – D5.

THE DRYER / THE BUS
Male, 20-60s, African-American. Both roles are narrator and friend to and subconscious of Caroline. Sings with a bluesy, gospel voice that can invoke fire, brimstone, and the grave. Vocal range: E3 – C6.

GRANDMA GELLMAN
Female, 55 – 65, Caucasian. Stuart’s Jewish mother and Noah’s grandmother. She is concerned for her son’s melancholy and an admirer of his new wife. Vocal range: G3 – E5.

GRANDPA GELLMAN / THE STATUE OF THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER
Male, 60 – 70, Caucasian. Stuart’s Jewish father and Noah’s grandfather. He is aloof to the changes occurring in the South. Vocal range: G3 – E5.

ROSE STOPNICK GELLMAN
Female, 35 – 45, Caucasian. An old friend of the Gellmans, a “good Jewish girl,” and Stuart’s new wife. She has recently moved to the South. She is out of her element in her new home, but determined to run a tight ship. Vocal range: G3 – E5.

STUART GELLMAN
Male, 30 – 40, Caucasian. Noah’s father and Rose’s new husband. He is also Caroline’s employer. He has trouble connecting to his son and new wife. Vocal range: B3 – G5.

NOAH GELLMAN
Boy age 7 – 13 to play 8, Caucasian. The precocious son of Caroline’s Jewish employers, the Gellmans. Forgetful but very smart, Noah idolizes and romanticizes Caroline. Noah, along with Caroline and Rose, is one of the leading roles of the show. Strong unchanged vocal range: G3 – E5.

MR. STOPNICK
Male, 60 – 75, Caucasian. Rose’s father from New York City. A politically progressive Jewish man with dissenting opinions, who enjoys a good argument. Vocal range: F3 – E5.

[RADIO #2/#3] THIS ROLE IS CAST.

JACKIE THIBODEAUX
Male, 9 – 12, African-American. Caroline’s son. Though he is older than Joe, he is more sweet and naïve. Vocal range: A3 – D5. This role will most likely be a local hire (Columbus, Ohio area), but we are open to seeing performers who are not local hires.

JOE THIBODEAUX
Male, 8-11 years old, African-American. Caroline’s son. Though he is the baby of the family, he is outspoken and skeptical. Vocal range: B3 – D5. This role will most likely be a local hire (Columbus, Ohio area), but we are open to seeing performers who are not local hires.

EMMIE THIBODEAUX (role is now available)
18+ to play late teens. Caroline's only daughter and the second of four children. Observant, rebellious, outspoken. Very strong singer, with youthful sound. F3 to F5.
