Seeking
East West Players, the longest running theater of color in the US is seeking performers to play Japanese and Mixed-Racial Japanese characters for Susan Stanton's TAKARAZUKA!!

Preparation
Please prepare 1 contemporary monologue, (see individual character requirements) Singing, movement experience, and ability to speak Japanese a plus on select roles.

Callbacks: Sept 22 & 23, 2014
Rehearsals begin October 6, 2014. Previews begin November 6, opening Wednesday November 12 for a four week run (5 performances a week) through December 7, 2014.

Breakdown

A British filmmaker examines the onstage and offstage challenges of the central subject of his documentary; the soon-to-retire, Yuko Mikage, a leading Male performer of the The Takarazuka Revue in Japan; an all-female theatre company where women play all roles in lavish, Broadway-style productions.

Yuko Mikage: (female) Plays mid-twenties, is the lead male player in the Takarazuka Revue Company. She plays male roles, acts, sings and dances. Yuko exudes the bravado of an old hollywood leading man. She is an exceptional Top Star in the Takarazuka company. Please be prepared to perform a dramatic 1 minute monologue.

Yuko Mikage: (female Japanese performer) Plays mid-twenties, is the lead male player in the Takarazuka Revue Company. She plays male roles, acts, sings and dances. Yuko exudes the bravado of an old hollywood leading man. She is an exceptional Top Star in the Takarazuka company. Please be prepared to perform a dramatic 1 minute monologue. Must speak Japanese. Singing and movement ability preferred.

Chifumi Nobara: (female) Plays early twenties and is the lead female player in the
Takarazuka Revue Company. She plays the ingenue in the company who acts, sings, and dances. Chifumi struggles to maintain her calm composed exterior as her Top Star partner, Yuko, is about to leave her and retire. Please be prepared to perform a 1 minute dramedy (dramatic/comedic) or dramatic monologue.

Chifumi Nobara: (female Japanese Performer) Plays early twenties and is the lead female player in the Takarazuka Revue Company. She plays the ingenue in the company who acts, sings, and dances. Chifumi struggles to maintain her calm composed exterior as her Top Star partner, Yuko, is about to leave her and retire. Please be prepared to perform a 1 minute dramedy (dramatic/comedic) or dramatic monologue. Must speak Japanese. Singing and movement ability preferred.

Nigel Parker: (male) Plays late twenties-early thirties. A charming British Documentary filmmaker, mixed heritage half-Japanese/British, who makes his way into the Takarazuka Company to uncover their mystique and his own background regarding his mother. Mixed heritage performers encouraged to audition. A British accent is necessary for the role. Please be prepared to perform a 1 minute dramedy (dramatic/comedic) or dramatic monologue.

Junko/Ensemble: (female) Plays late teens-early twenties, a dedicated Takarazuka fan, who eventually auditions for the company when Nigel Parker encourages her to do so. Comedic and dramatic acting skills a plus. Please be prepared to perform a 1 minute comedic monologue. Please have a second 1minute dramatic monologue prepared just in case asked.

Masayo/Ensemble: (female) Plays late twenties-early 30’s, a dedicated Takarazuka fan. Junko is her friend and she spurs Junko on as she auditions for the company. Comedic and dramatic acting skills a plus. Please be prepared to perform a 1minute comedic monologue. Please have a second 1minute dramatic monologue prepared just in case asked. (Also plays Rui, Stage assistant, old woman)

Ariyoshi/Ensemble: (male) Plays within late 50’s -70-ish. Ariyoshi is the Japanese perfect host yet stern when necessary with the cast members of Takarazuka. He is the Japanese director of the Takarazuka Theatre Company. Please be prepared to perform a 1 minute comedic monologue. (Also Plays ‘Otousan’ (Yuko’s Stern Father), and ‘Old Man’).
