Breakdown

Young playwright Richard Collier has an encounter with a mysterious old woman on the opening night of his earliest success; she entreats him, to his bewilderment, to “come back to me.” Several years later, with his life and career in disarray, he seeks quiet and contemplation and checks in to a storied hotel from his youth. But his stay at the hotel turns into the journey of a lifetime as he unravels history—and time—to discover a powerful but perhaps impossible love.

SEEKING:

Richard Collier
Our leading man, mid-30’s. Handsome, edgy, charming, smart, sarcastic, wry. Richard is a struggling writer in the early 1980’s who discovers he is dying of a brain tumor. On a quest to find something lasting to write about, he discovers that he had had a relationship with Elise, a famous actress from the early 1900’s, and finds a way to travel back in time to meet her. Richard starts out the play a realist and a bit of a cynic, but he becomes a romantic. This role needs a very strong singer and actor with a good sense of humor. A' to A''. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

Elise McKenna
mid to late 20’s. Beautiful, ethereal, delicate on the surface but with real strength inside. Elise is a successful actress working with a touring theater company in 1912. Over the course of our story, she becomes one of the great actresses of the first part of the 20th century. When we first meet her, Elise is delicate and a china doll, she’s been closeted from the world by her manager for ten years. But through her relationship with Richard, her inner strength and passion is revealed. This role needs a very strong singer with a big range, excellent actress, and someone who truly feels they are from another time. G' to F''. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

William Robinson
40’s – 50’s. Elise’s domineering manager and producer. He should be handsome, but with a little bit of menace. Robinson is all business, and his top concern is making Elise a star. But he also loves her, though he doesn’t know how to express it. When his relationship to Elise is threatened by the appearance of Richard, he finally recognizes his feelings and decides he must keep Elise through whatever means necessary. This role requires an actor of strength, a strong baritone, and one who can make our antagonist a real a complicated person. G' to E'' (Falsetto)

Arthur
70’s – 80’s. Arthur is the porter at the Grand Hotel in 1982. He’s been there since 1910. He loves his hotel and serves the guests with a twinkle and a sly sense of humor. He guides Richard through the hotel in the first act, and helps him on his quest to find and get to Elise in the past. Ideally, the actor playing this role will still be a good singer, and will have a slightly magical quality. A' to E''. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

Young Arthur
A kid, ideally around 7 years old. Adorable, precocious, playful. Young Arthur lives in 1910 and immediately takes a liking to Richard when he shows up in the past. The role is mostly non-speaking and does not need to sing, but will be onstage throughout much of Act II so needs confidence and consistency as a young performer.

SEEKING ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS.
