Please prepare any brief monologue written before 1940. Please be comfortable with the language and confident in using it.

Breakdown

Gertrude Stein’s play is typically experimental. The language is playful and musical; the play has no clear narrative line and no clear division into characters; there are no settings, and no stage directions. Our work on the play will largely involve testing out different approaches to how it might be performed, along the way we will be challenged to set aside any assumptions about what a play is or could be. Therefore versatility and an openness to experiment are key criteria for our cast.

Please note that all roles have been cast but all seen will be considered for replacements.

3 Ensemble Members (2 women, 1 man):
Already CAST. Seeking for possible replacements. Actors must be comfortable and willing to say things on stage without understanding what they mean; they must be comfortable and willing to try things on stage without understanding why they are doing them; they must be comfortable with having no given character or role to play. They must be comfortable knowing that they may even be performing actions and words before an invited audience without a clear sense of why they are doing them, or of what they mean. Actors must be confident and skilled with abstract and poetic language. Any age, any race, any physical type could be cast.
