THE NARRATOR (EL GALLO) – Male, 40s, vibrant Baritone or Bari-Bass, low A to high G, particularly strong in lower range, sings with flair and panache. Our guide through the musical, EL GALLO relates authentically with the audience.

THE GIRL (LUISA) – Female, plays 16, legit but youthful-sounding Soprano, can sing both very simply and with operatic flamboyance, high C, strong musicianship and acting required, able to make the journey from naive and exuberant youth, though hurt and pain into discovering a wiser and more mature self and love. Moves well.

THE BOY (MATT) – Male, plays 19, sweet-voiced Baritone or Bari-Tenor, low A to high G, strong musicianship and acting required, able to make the journey from naive, to restless, to broken, to discovering a wiser self. Moves well.

THE BOY’S FATHER (HUCKLEBEE) – Male, 40s-50s, “Character” Baritone or Bari-Bass, low A to high F, stronger in low range, not necessarily a pretty voice but must hold own harmonies. Learned horticulture in the navy.

THE GIRL’S FATHER (BELLOMY) – Male, 40s- 50s, “Character” Baritone or Bari-Tenor, low A to high G, not necessarily a pretty voice but must hold own harmonies. A button salesman.

THE OLD ACTOR (HENRY) – Male, 60s+, a classically-trained, dignified actor, with both terrific comic timing and a fierce darkness. Vocal range flexible, doesn’t sing much but must sing in tune and hold harmonies.

THE MAN WHO DIES (MORTIMER) - Male, adept with physical comedy, terrific comic timing with a fierce darkness. Vocal range flexible, doesn’t sing much but must sing in tune and hold harmonies.

THE MUTE - Female, non-singing role, but must have good sense of rhythm (some basic percussion) and physically strong. Dance training a plus.

M. BUTTERFLY
by David Henry Hwang
Directed by Bart DeLorenzo
1st rehearsal: September 27, 2016
Performances: October 25 - November 20, 2016

RENE GALLIMARD- Male, late 40’s for most of the play. Gallimard is a former French diplomat who has been imprisoned for treason. His crime was passing classified documents to the Chinese, through his lover, Song.

SONG LILING- Young male, a beautiful Chinese opera diva who is actually a man masquerading as a woman. Song pretends to fit the stereotype that Western men have of the submissive Oriental woman, however, Song can also be assertive in his views about how women are treated in Chinese society and of the West's prejudiced attitude to China. Sings and dances. Some nudity.

MARC/MAN #2/CONSUL SHARPLESS- Male, 30-40’s. Marc is an old school friend of Gallimard's, and his complete opposite. Outgoing, confident, rowdy – a “ladies’ man.”

RENEE/WOMAN AT PARTY/GIRL IN MAGAZINE- Female, 25-30. Renee is a student from Denmark with whom Gallimard has an affair. She is physically attractive and sexually uninhibited. Also doubles in a brief scene as a fantasy porno actress. Some nudity.

COMRADE CHIN/SUZUKI/SHU FANG– Female, 30-50. Comrade Chin is the no-nonsense, authoritative Chinese Communist Party official who instructs Song to spy.

HELGA– Female, 30-40’s. Helga is Gallimard's sophisticated French wife. While the couple lives in Beijing, she remains ignorant of Chinese culture and appears to dislike the Chinese.

M. TOULON/MAN #1/JUDGE- Male. 50-60’s. Toulon is the French Ambassador in Beijing, Gallimard’s superior. Authoritative, sophisticated, thinks of his employees as his children.

KUROGO DANCERS– Men/women, “invisible” stagehand used in Japanese Kabuki theatre, do not have to be dancers but must move well.
