Breakdown

February 25, 1964 marked a great day for boxing fans. It was the day heavyweight champion Sonny Liston was supposed to put an end to the brash braggadocio of his loudmouth, 22 year old opponent, Cassius Clay. Instead, Clay would shock the world with his unexpected victory. No celebration had been planned since no one thought he would actually win, except his close and not yet legendary friends; activist Malcolm X, soul singer Sam Cooke, and professional football player Jim Brown. The foursome would throw together an impromptu party in Malcolm’s tiny motel room located in the downtrodden, black side of town, and the next morning Cassius would make an announcement that would shock the world yet again. One Night In Miami…dramatizes what might have transpired on that night in Malcolm’s motel room as the world was rapidly changing and the civil rights struggle was In full swing. In less than a year, two of these friends would be dead. But on this night, the possibilities seemed endless.

Seeking:

[CASSIUS CLAY a.k.a. MUHAMMAD ALI] (Male, 20’s, African American) Cassius has just won the heavyweight boxing title from Sonny Liston and is fresh from the fight. He is brash, witty, and arrogant. A tall, handsome man with an athletic build.

[JIM BROWN] (Male, Late 20’s-Late30’s, African American) He is the professional star running back for the Cleveland Browns. A towering, intimidating presence on and off the field. Most people know he is someone to be taken seriously. He has an incredibly sharp wit, though he likes to keep that aspect of his personality under wraps.

[MALCOLM X] (Male, Late 30’s, very light complexioned African American) The wear of a tough year shows in his appearance making him look older than he is. Malcolm is a fiery and revered preacher in the Nation of Islam. He sports a charming, dry sense of humor that regularly surprises people. He is streetwise, disarmingly intelligent, and mentally agile. Malcolm shares a strong fraternal bond with the brash young Cassius.

[SAM COOKE] (Male, Mid 30’s, African American) A superstar singer enjoying a string of pop and R&B hits. His fame is only eclipsed by the likes of Elvis, much to his chagrin. He is Malcolm’s intellectual equal, though he prefers to keep his intelligence hidden behind smooth talk, audacious style, and deft humor. He is swagger personified. ACTOR MUST BE ABLE TO SING WELL.

[BROTHER KAREEM] (Male, Mid 30’s-Early40’s, African American) Kareem is a senior security guard in the Nation of Islam. He is a devout follower of the honorable Elijah Muhammad. Intimidating and menacing in both size and presence. He can suck the air out of the room with a single word or glance.

[BROTHER JAMAAL] (Male, Early 20’s, African American) A young Nation of Islam security member and Kareem’s apprentice. New to both the organization and this detail. Youthful, funny, and easily star struck. Like everyone’s kid brother.
