Breakdown

February 25, 1964. Twenty-two-year-old Cassius Clay has just won the world heavyweight boxing title. Instead of hitting the town, Clay chooses to celebrate in a Miami hotel room with three close friends—activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and football star Jim Brown. This fictional account of a real night imagines what might have happened in that tiny hotel room. As the Civil Rights movement stirs outside, and the melody of 'A Change is Gonna Come' hangs in the air, four men will emerge from that one night ready to define a new world

SEEKING:

Cassius Clay
A breakout star on the rise with a chip on his shoulder. Believes God has bestowed him with divine skill. Confident in his abilities, he has just won the world heavyweight boxing title from Sonny Liston. On this night, he is moments before joining the Nation of Islam (and 'becoming' Muhammad Ali). Impressionable and eager—but not without his doubts. Male, early 20s.

Jim Brown
A star running back for the Cleveland Browns who holds every rushing and touchdown record in the NFL. Now working towards a career in film. Self-assured. A straight shooter with a dry sense of humor. Prefers overt racism to liberal ignorance. Hates nothing more than condescension. Male, mid- to late-20s.

Sam Cooke
A superstar singer-songwriter and true entertainer who enjoys success [a Jay-Z of his time]. So far, his string of pop and R&B hits include 'You Send Me' and 'Bring it on Home to Me.' A savvy entrepreneur working the system, though conflicted about his role in the industry. Razor sharp, scrappy, and forthright. Vocally opposes Malcolm’s absolutist activism. Singing required. Male, early 30s.

Malcolm X
A fiery preacher in the Nation of Islam who has recently been silenced for his negative comments about the death of President Kennedy. A natural leader. Insistent and headstrong—with his share of doubts and troubles. Male, late-30s to early 40s.

Kareem
A senior Nation of Islam security guard and a devout follower of Elijah Muhammad. The Fruit of Islam. Has sworn to protect Malcolm; ready to fight. Male, mid-30s.

Jamaal
A younger Nation of Islam security guard. Works under Kareem as an apprentice. Green, curious. Male, mid-20s.
