Preparation
Prepare a brief musical theatre or pop song which best shows your personality and abilities. Bring sheet music, in the correct key; accompanist provided.

If auditioning for WIT, prepare a brief monologue in the style of the show.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together and your AEA card.

DANNY
Male, reads late teens. Tenor. The leader of the Burger Palace Boys. Well built, good looking, with an air of cool, easy going charm. Strong and confident. Excellent singer, actor and dancer.

SANDY
Female, reads late teens. Soprano. Danny’s love interest. Sweet, wholesome, naïve, cute, like Sandra Dee of the ‘Gidget’ movies. Sassy and sultry after her transformation.

DANNY ZUKO
Male, reads late teens. Tenor. The leader of the Burger Palace Boys. Well built, good looking, with an air of cool, easy going charm. Strong and confident. Excellent singer, actor and dancer.

SANDY DUMBROWSKI
Female, reads late teens. Soprano. Danny’s love interest. Sweet, wholesome, naïve, cute, like Sandra Dee of the ‘Gidget’ movies. Sassy and sultry after her transformation.

KENICKIE
Male, reads late teens. Second-in-command of the Burger Palace Boys. Tough-looking, tattooed, surly, avoids any show of softness. Has an off-beat sense of humor.

SONNY LATIERRI
Male, reads late teens. Italian-looking, with shiny black hair and dark oily skin. A braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady-killer.

ROGER
Male, reads late teens. The “anything-for-a-laugh” stocky type. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes and ideas. A clown who enjoys putting other people on.

DOODY
Male, reads late teens.Youngest of the guys. Small, boyish, open, with a disarming smile and a hero worshipping attitude toward the other guys. Possibly be able to play the guitar.

BETTY RIZZO
Female, reads late teens. Leader of the Pink Ladies. She is tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable. Traditionally played as Italian with unconventional good looks.

MARTY
Female, reads late teens. The “beauty” of the Pink Ladies. Pretty, looks older than the other girls, but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. Tries to act sophisticated.

JAN
Female, reads late teens. Chubby, compulsive eater. Loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with boys.

FRENCHY
Female, reads late teens. A dreamer. Good-natured and dumb. Heavily made-up, fussy about her appearance particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician.

PATTY SIMCOX
Reads late teens. A typical cheerleader at a middle-class American public high school. Attractive and athletic. Aggressive, sure of herself, given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She can twirl a baton.

EUGENE FLORCZYK
Reads late teens. The class valedictorian. Physically awkward, pompous but gullible, has a high-pitched voice.

VINCE FONTAINE
A typical “teen audience” emcee. Slick, egotistical, fast-talking. A veteran “Greaser.”

TEEN ANGEL
A good-looking, Fabian-look-alike. Strong singer and performer.

MISS LYNCH
Principal of Rydell High School. Stern and demanding teacher. Comedic actress.

VIVIAN BEARING, PhD
late 40s – mid 50s. A professor of seventeenth-century poetry at the University, diagnosed with stage IV, metastatic ovarian cancer. She is uncompromising, callous, and brilliant.

HARVEY KELEKIAN, M. D.
40s - 50s. Chief of Medical Oncology, University Hospital. Vivian's peer academically, Kelekian sees Vivian as an excellent candidate for an aggressive treatment program that will contribute greatly to his cancer research. Will also play MR. BEARING: Late 30s – mid 50s. Vivian's Father. An ice-cold intellectual, not suited to child care. Seen in an illuminating flashback.

JASON POSNER, M.D.
Late 20s – early 30s. Clinical Fellow, Medical Oncology Branch. A younger version of Vivian - passionate and intense about his research and does not suffer fools gladly. Actually attended one of Vivian's classes because it was deemed one of the toughest classes on the liberal arts curriculum. He earned a hard to get A-. Both Jason and Vivian discover their own humanity through their shared experience, although neither lesson is easy.

SUSIE MONAHAN, RN., B.S.N.
Late 20s to early 30s. Primary Nurse, Cancer Inpatient Unit. Susie is the heart of the play. In a world of academics who live in their head and reason through every decision, Susie plays it from the heart and gut. She's an excellent caregiver, but the role is dimensional and well written, never minimizing Vivian's pain or need to intellectualize the experience.

E. M. ASHFORD, D. PHILOSOPHY
Woman who Plays 55-75 Professor Emerita of English Literature. Vivian's college mentor.

mid 20s - early 30s. Mezzo Soprano with a strong top. Must be able to dance well. British accent. Neat and tidy, delightfully vain. Very particular and sharp. Strange and extraordinary, sometimes frightening but at the same time exciting. Practically perfect in every way. Always means exactly what she says. Principal role.

BERT
30s. Baritone to G. Manly but warm. Cockney accent. Inexplicably has a variety of occupations – match man, pavement painter, chimney sweep, hurdy gurdy player. A friend of Mary Poppins who is always nearby to watch the children and observe the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. A song and dance man. Excellent tap dancer. Principal role.

MR. GEORGE BANKS
early 40s. Baritone. A senior bank clerk by name, nature, and occupation. Believes, however wrong he may be, that he had the perfect childhood. Rules with an iron fist but his emotional armour is concealing a sensitive soul. He is a pipe and slippers man who doesn’t have much to do with his children. Absent minded, always losing his possessions. Likes things just so even though money is always tight for a salaried man. Principal role.

MRS WINIFRED BANKS
30s. Mezzo Soprano. Very busy trying to live up to her husband’s desire to only associate with the best people. A loving but distracted mother. She is overwhelmed by the conflict between her desire to please her husband and children and the contradictory suspicion that she’s both not up to the job and worth more. Principal role.

JANE BANKS
Age in appearance - 11. Pretty and attractive girl. Exuberant but willful. Occasionally inclined to snobbishness. Principal role. Maximum height: 57”

MICHAEL BANKS
Age in appearance – 9. Cute and cheeky. Excitable. Naughty. Adores his father and tries to be like him. Principal role. Maximum height: 55”

MRS BRILL
50s. Alto. The Housekeeper. Always complaining that the house is understaffed. Most of the time her intimidating exterior barely masks the warmth underneath. Big, bosomy and harassed. Barks rather than speaks. Doesn’t have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. Principal role.

MISS ANDREW
40s-50s. Soprano with Alto Belt. George’s old nanny. Overbearing lady with a huge trumpeting voice. Beak nosed, grim mouthed, small peering be-spectacled eyes. A bully who only knows one way of doing things – her way. Principal role

THE BIRDWOMAN
50s. Covered in patchwork of old shawls, her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. Sings “Feed the Birds”. Principal Role.

ROBERTSON AY
Early 20’s. Tenor. The house boy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling. He never gets things right so believes himself to be useless. Principal Role

ADMIRAL BOOM
50s. Baritone. Retired. A physically large man who has a loud and booming voice. Speaks in navy jargon. Also plays CHAIRMAN: an Edwardian stuffed-shirt. Head of the bank. Principal Role.

KING ARTHUR
Late 30s-60s. Baritone. The King of England who sets out on a quest to form the Knights of the Roundtable and find the Holy Grail. Great Humor. Good singer.

SIR ROBIN
30s-40s. Baritone. A Knight of the Roundtable. Ironically called ‘Sir Robin the Brave,’ though he couldn’t be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. Also plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk.

SIR LANCELOT
30s-40s. Baritone. A Knight of the Roundtable. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate, does discover his ‘softer side.’ This actor MUST be great with character voices and accents, as he also plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman, the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights, and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent.

THE LADY OF THE LAKE
20s – 40s. Alto with large range. A Diva. Strong, beautiful, possesses mystical powers. The leading lady of the show. Great singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Sings everything from opera to pop to scatting. Gets angry easily.

PATSY
30s-40s. King Arthur’s horse and servant. Under appreciated but always longing for King Arthur’s approval. Good, funny, physical mover with some tap dancing. Also plays MAYOR, a jolly red-faced man who advertises the merits of his hometown and the drunken, useless GUARD 2.

SIR GALAHAD
30s. A Knight of the Roundtable. Begins as Dennis, a lower class ‘mud gatherer’ who becomes Knighted and transforms into the dashing Sir Galahad. Also plays PRINCE HERBERT’S FATHER, a wealthy, brutish Yorkshireman at odds with his sensitive son, THE BLACK KNIGHT who is always ready to duel despite multiple injuries. Strong bari-tenor singing required.

SIR BEDEVERE
20s-40s.A Knight of the Roundtable. An inept scholar. Also plays DENNIS GALAHAD’S MOTHER, a shrill peasant woman, and CONCORDE, Sir Lancelot’s horse. No solo singing.

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE PLAYED BY THE SAME ACTOR
20s-30s. Tenor singing required. Very good mover.
HISTORIAN: A tweedy academic.
NOT DEAD FRED: A sickly little fellow who, despite others’ beliefs, claims he is “not yet dead.”
FRENCH GUARD: The condemnatory French sidekick to the French Taunter.
MINSTREL: In Sir Robin’s band.
PRINCE HERBERT: The hopeful and frilly prince who loves to sing and pines for his love atop a tower.
