Preparation
Please prepare a brief cut (16 bars or 30-45 seconds) in the style of the show. Bring sheet music, accompanist provided. Actors are welcome to sing from the score.

FRANKLIN SHEPARD
Male, 30-40 yrs old. A successful and sometimes seemingly vapid film producer, also an innocent optimist when he was younger. He’s not a bad guy; talented and tormented. Baritone (A2 to Bb4)

CHARLEY KRINGAS
Male, 30-40 yrs old. Frank’s best friend. Sometimes stubborn, always intense. Now a successful lyricist, also optimistic when he was younger. Baritenor (A#2 - G#4)

MARY FLYNN
Female, 30-40 yrs old. Frank and Charlie’s friend. Very intelligent. Sardonic and always witty. Her optimism gets clouded over by missed opportunities. Mezzo with bright belt (G3 - Gb5)

BETH SPENCER
Female, 25-35 yrs old. Frank’s first wife and mother of his son. A downtrodden housewife who once was a Midwestern hopeless romantic trying to make her way in NYC. Soprano (A3 - G5)

GUSSIE CARNEGIE
Female, 25-35 yrs old. Frank’s second wife. Helplessly in love with him, she is a flamboyant and successful actress. Big theatre belt (G3 - C5)

JOE JOSEPHSON
Male, 40-55 yrs old. Gussie’s first husband. A Broadway producer type who later falls on hard times. Character baritone (A2 - F#4)

FRANKLIN SHEPARD
JR. Male, 8-12 yrs old. Son of Beth and Frank. Energetic and eager to please. Should sing well.
