BREAKDOWN

NOTE: With the exception of the Witches, all roles in this production will be cast as people color. They represent the people of a formerly colonized state. It could be an African nation, an island in the West Indies, a state in the Middle East or a country in South America. The inhabitants are not necessarily just the indigenous people of the land but also citizens who may have originally been brought into the country as slaves or bondsmen.

SEEKING:

MACBETH:
Early 40’s – early 60’s. A person of color. A nobleman, a general, a warrior. A man used to pushing through obstacle and creating stratagem but at the behest of others. Something of a naïf, he needs to be shown opportunity and the road to power but once shown, he seizes it and destroys a fragile world of stability. He is not intrinsically evil so the knocking of conscience and the unraveling of a new democracy eventually undoes him.

LADY MACBETH
30’s – late 40’s. A person of color. A woman born into the wrong age. A woman who sees opportunity and advantage, who spurs her husband to action and to moments he would never have seen. Wildly ambitious, subtle and more dangerous than her husband. She sees power, smells it, is intoxicated by it and chases it. But her ambitions are finally betrayed by her own humanity.

LADY MACDUFF
30’s – early 40’s. A person of color. Warm, maternal, elegant and noble. Along with her children and her husband, the hope and the best of the land. Must also understudy Lady Macbeth so must have great range.

MACDUFF
40’s. A person of color. Incorruptible, deeply attached to his family as well as his country. A nobleman and a warrior but also a husband and father.
