Stage Managers: Equity Stage Managers are invited to send resumes to Matthew Whiton, Production Manager, at the Lyric Stage Company, 140 Clarendon St., Boston, MA 02116. Please note all Equity Stage Manager positions have been filled at this time.



PREPARATION

Audition slots are FIVE (5) minutes long. Each actor has TWO (2) minutes to perform. Please prepare appropriate material of your choosing, which may be from one or more of the season’s shows. Scripts, a reader, and an accompanist will be provided at the audition. Please be prepared to state your starting & stopping places. You may audition for one or more roles in the season. There are no auditions sides.

If singing, please bring sheet music. Please bring a headshot & resume to the audition, stapled together.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

BREAKDOWN

For pre-cast roles, auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. No understudies are being cast.

Seeking:

ROSE: female, 40’s, Strong Mezzo belt, driven, determined, charming, and unstoppable, she is the alpha stage mother, living out her own desires through her children.

LOUISE: female, early 20s, Mezzo to Eb. Rose’s eldest daughter. Shy, loyal and awkward as a kid, she eventually becomes an international burlesque sensation, Gypsy Rose Lee. Role includes striptease and various states of undress. Must be a strong dancer.

DAINTY JUNE: female, early 20s, Belt to D. Rose’s youngest daughter, the star of the show. Splits, high kicks, baton twirling, point work, and any other special skills a plus. Excellent pointe work and dancer.

TULSA: male, early 20s. Tenor. Song and dance man, trained in tap and ballet, handsome and charming. Excellent dancer.

TESSIE: female, 30s-40s. Mezzo, A burlesque performer whose specialty is ballet. Role includes striptease and various states of undress.

MAZEPPA: female, 30s-40s. Alto. A burlesque performer who plays the trumpet. Role includes striptease and various states of undress.

ELECTRA: female, 30s-40s. Alto. A burlesque performer. Role includes striptease and various states of undress.

HERBIE: male, 40s. An agent turned candy salesman that goes back to show business for Rose.
Various Ensemble Roles: must be excellent singer/dancers.

ADDISON MIZNER: male, 35-40. The levelheaded brother living in the shadows of Wilson's schemes. A visionary artist with flair and guile. Cares for his mother. Not as prone to seizing the world as his brother. Easily influenced by his older brother Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: F3

WILSON MIZNER: male, 38-46. Handsome and charming. Always has a good time, but also a con artist involved in a series of scams. Lives his life as one big, adventurous attempt to seize opportunity. The greedy, selfish brother to Addison. Vocal range top: A5 Vocal range bottom: F3

MAMA MIZNER: female, 60s. Mother to Addison and Wilson. Encourages her sons to follow opportunity by any means necessary. Coddles Wilson, whom she clearly favors, and ultimately loses him to his own greed. Depends on Addison to take care of her. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: G3

PAPA MIZNER: male, 70s. Father to Addison and Wilson. On his deathbed, he tells his sons to embrace the opportunities of the new world. Proud. Nostalgic. Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: A3

HOLLIS BESSEMER: male, 20-35. An honest businessman who rejects the family business to build his dream of an artist colony. Partners with Addison to create an extremely successful real estate business and finally a fortune of his own. Sensitive. Loves Addison Vocal range top: G5 Vocal range bottom: B3

ORLANDO, female, 20s-30s, beautiful, melancholy, poet whom people can’t help falling in love with, Orlando is a man for the first half of the play, before transforming into a woman. A physical dynamic performer who is willing to cut her hair is a plus.

SASHA, female, 20s-30s, a Russian princess, strong, powerful, and captivating.

CHORUS: physical character actors who play multiple roles in addition to functioning as narrators.

Seeking:

DOROTHY: female, early 20s, Mezzo Soprano, G3-B5. Bright eyed and lively. Would rather remain a child as long as possible.

ADDAPERLE: female, any age, Mezzo Soprano, F3-C5. Good Witch of the North. Her magic abilities don't always pan out as well as she would like them to.

SCARECROW: male, any age, Tenor, D3-A4. Tired of being a scarecrow and the prospect of not going anywhere. Embarks on the journey to see The Wiz in hopes he can provide a brain.

TIN MAN: male, any age, Baritone, E3-A4. Human at one time. Lost all his limbs to a cursed axe. Joins in the journey in hopes the Wiz will provide him a heart because “it isn’t enough to be good looking.”

LION: male, any age, Baritone, G2-Bb4. Travels around the jungle scaring people, but has “a yellow streak a mile wide.” Coward state stems from deeper mother issues and gets regular counseling from an owl. Joins in the journey to see The Wiz to gain some courage.

THE WIZ: male, any age, Tenor, C3-A4. All powerful leader over the land of Oz. Hides his true nature behind the façade of a temperamental leader. His true identity is an enigma.

EVILLENE: female, any age, Alto, Bb3-Db5. Wicked Witch of the West. Low-down evil. Not a kind bone in her body nor kind thought in her rotten mind.

GLINDA: female, any age, Alto, C4-Eb5. Good Witch of the South. Prettiest of all the witches. Very wise in the way of show business.
