Breakdown

ENSEMBLE SINGERS:
Extremely strong singer/actors, capable of wide dramatic range and strong vocal range. For the ensemble and some to understudy principal roles below:

JEAN VALJEAN
Tenor or High Baritone ( Low A to high b) 35 TO 50/ The central character; physically robust , mature and compassionate. Released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang - a man with a kind heart & sense of duty.

JAVERT
Baritone, (Low F to high F#) / 25 TO 35/- Inspector who is the antagonist and tracking Valjean. A man with no compassion.

ADULT COSETTE
Lyric Soprano, (low Bb to high C) / 20 TO 35/ daughter of Fantine; strong-willed, intelligent and a heroine adopted by Jean Valjean and in love with Marius.

FANTINE
Mezzo- Soprano with belt, (Gb to Eb) 25 TO 30/ - a beautiful young girl forced into prostitutions; a noble character robbed of her pride, and life. Unwed mother to Cosette.

THENARDIER
Bari-Tenor, (low C to G#) / 30 TO 35/ owner of a tavern, Eponine's father, (an experienced character actor).

MADAME THENARDIER
Mezzo Belt, (G# to Db) /30 TO 35/ – Owner of the Tavern and an equal partner in crime to her vulgar husband; greedy, evil and larger than life. (An experienced character actress.)

EPONINE THENARDIER
Alto/Mezzo Belt, (low F# to sharp E) / 20 TO 30/ Daughter of the Thenardiers; young girl who is streetwise and tough but sensitive. Loves Marius.

MARIUS
Lyric Tenor, (Low A to high Ab) / 25 TO 30/ – Romantic hero, leading man, passionate and willful, courageous; falls in love with Cosette.

ENJOLRAS
High Bari/Tenor, (low A to high G) / 20 TO 35/ - handsome leader of the students, brave, daring; passionately engaged with the revolution.
