BREAKDOWN
A Note from the Authors: During Elizabethan and Jacobean times, the most popular genre in the theatre was the Revenge Play, in either comic or tragic form. The Revenge Tragedy took place at court and featured royalty (as in Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy); the Revenge Comedy took place in the city and focused on characters from all classes, and was almost always set in and around the celebration of some festival (as in Bartholomew Fair by Ben Jonson). Revenge Plays typically employed a number of recurring dramatic conventions or devices: madness or feigned madness, mistaken identity (sometimes involving siblings or twins), and ghosts or the supernatural. Characters were based on individual humors like goodness, avarice, snobbery, lust, narcissism, pride, or jealousy, and, of course, there was always a Revenger: the Protagonist who has suffered some injustice or injury. The Comedies ended with the perpetrator of the injustice getting his or her comeuppance. The Tragedies ended in a massacre.
Independence is a modern day Revenge Play that borrows from both sides of the fence.
