IDAHO: THE COMEDY MUSICAL

Music: Buddy Sheffield and Keith Thompson
Book/Lyrics: Buddy Sheffield

SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES IMMEDIATELY:

[WHIP MASTERS] Principal. 30ish. Handsome and dashing, yet fun-loving and sensitive. A man of impeccable character, yet not wed to convention. Very strong baritone voice, solid up to a G. Ability to move well.

[CASSIE PURDY] Principal. 25-mid 30’s. A virgin mail-order bride from Ohio. Bright and pretty, if slightly naïve. Cassie struggles with the duty she owes to the man who bought her and the unexpected love she finds with a likeable spudbuster. Excellent, warm, stylistically versatile Lyric Soprano voice. Should be able to sing classic Musical Theatre style as well as silky folk. Belt/mix up to a D, head/mix up to a G. A completely winning personality. Excellent comedic skills. Ability to move well.

[SLIM JOHNSON] Principal. Mid 30’s. Unfalteringly good-natured and eternally optimistic with a winning smile. A good friend when the chips are down. Strong voice with the ability to really sell a comic “patter song”. Excellent and athletic dancer. Bari/tenor, up to a G (A is a plus).

[“I DO” IDA DUNHAM] Principal. 20’s–30’s, the town trollop. Ida’s butt has more fingerprints than the FBI, but she is honest and completely unapologetic about it. Still, she is not the typical “ruined” woman. To her, what she does is completely natural and shameless. Very strong belting voice (up to a D). Versatile range for ensemble singing also a plus. Excellent comedic skills. Strong dancer.

[AUNT PEARLIE] Principal. ‘50’s ish (or the ability to pull it off). A “God-fearin’ frontier woman” and the matriarch of the community. Pearlie is steadfast in her beliefs, but not above bending the rules a bit for the sake of young love. Her bucolic honesty brings out a lot of “zingers” aimed at the folks around her.
Very strong comedic skills. Strong mezzo-soprano voice, low G to D above middle C.

[JED STRUNK] Principal. 40s–50s. Classic comic bad guy with sado-masochistic undertones. Just smart enough to get himself into trouble. All of the moral fiber of a wounded jackal. Excellent comedy skills. Strong baritone voice, Low A to F above middle C. Imposing presence.

[MAVIS WHITE…EAGLE] Principal. Mid 30’s–mid 40’s. Stalwart African-American townswoman posing as a Native American. You have to get up very early to put one over on Mavis. She sees it like it is and tells it like it is. Very strong belting voice (up to an F#), strong warm lower voice, down to a G, excellent comedic skills. Ability to move well.

[UNCLE FATE] Principal. 50-60. Avuncular community patriarch and the local Justice of the Peace. Devoted to his duty, but easily cowed by his strong-willed wife, Auntie Pearlie. Pleasant voice, Baritone, low A to D above middle C. Excellent comedy skills.

[YANK DALEY] Ensemble. 20’s. Fresh-faced and innocent spud-buster. Good tenor (up to a Bb) voice, excellent dancer, strong comedic skills.

[GEORGE MEANY] Ensemble. 25-35. Dim-witted evil sidekick to Jed Strunk, his idol. Good voice with the ability to carry brief solo parts. Excellent dance skills.

[MANNY MEANY] Ensemble. 25-35. Dim-witted evil sidekick to Jed Strunk, his idol. Good voice with the ability to carry brief solo parts. Excellent dance skills.

[DOC GENERIC/ EXPOSITION JACK] Ensemble. 40-60. A likeable but somewhat salty frontier doctor. / A wizened old prospector type. Good voice for choral parts. Excellent comic ability with the chops to individualize the two characters. Good dancer.

[JOE/DREAM SEQUENCE WHIP] Ensemble. 25-30. Good actor/singer. Excellent dancer.

[BELLE/DREAM CASSIE] Ensemble. 20’s–30’s. An enthusiastic townswoman. Strong voice. Good dancer.

[SUKEY] Ensemble. 20’s - 30’s. African-American. Good comedic skills. Strong soulful voice. Good dancer.

[CRAZY BETTY FELTER] Ensemble. 20’s–30’s. Wiley, sexy, obsessed. Somewhat devious and vengeful. Excellent voice with the ability to carry short solo parts. Excellent dance skills. Good comedic skills.

[ANITA POLK] Ensemble. 20’s–30’s. A basically good, but easily swayed townswoman. Strong voice. Good dancer.
