Breakdown

Production Description:
Zhu Yi is a playwright and screenwriter, currently in residence as a Youngblood Writer with the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York. She received her MFA in Playwriting at Columbia University and is adjunct faculty at Nanjing University. Zhu Yi was a guest artist in Theater Emory’s Global Voices staged reading festival in the spring of 2015.

I AM A MOON is a story about love, all manner of love: Love that is beautiful as well as painful, obsessive and possessive, innocent and voyeuristic, misguided and meant to be. Love appears and then disappears as quickly as it arrived. The wounds of love – craters, bruises, hickeys – are a recurring motif. How we leave marks on one another is the journey of Zhu Yi’s play. Time suspends, the moon appears, strangers meet and memories come in a rush. I AM A MOON explores the East/West perceptions of intimacy, self-image and the body with humor, lyricism and mystery. The production elements are streamlined and spare with key sound elements and a central image of the moon. The year is 2011.

Seeking:

Astronaut:
Male (30 – 50). Asian. A billionaire who is with a private spaceflight company. He wants to see the moon with his own eyes because he has seen everything else and because he had very poor eyesight as a child. He strikes up a long-distance relationship with The Host back on earth. He is haunted by a childhood fairy tale: he hopes to see the lady who has lived on the moon for 4000 years. He crash-lands at the end of the play. He never finds the moon lady and he finds, not heaven, but a planet full of wounds.

Jimmy:
Male (35 – 55). Asian. Runs a fruit store with his wife Mei. His story begins by picking up the phone and being given the news of the death of the film actress, Ai Iijima. He slowly puts down the phone and cries for a very long time. He had myopia as a child and his first pair of glasses revealed a new and clear world. Comic tales of trying to kiss girls with glasses as the obstacle. Always wanted to be a pilot but couldn’t realize the dream because of his eyesight. Waits ten years for love. Falls immediately for Mei.

Mei:
Female (35 – 55). Asian. Runs the fruit store with her husband Jimmy. Has a bachelor’s degree. Her family thinks she is wasting her time with the store but she loves the simplicity of selling fresh produce. The juice of the fruit is the juice of life. She is haunted by an experience with a professor in college who touched her inappropriately. There was a big scene and the professor was caught by a crowd and humiliated. She loves sitting in the moonlight with Jimmy
