Breakdown

NOTE FOR ALL ROLES:
This is a punk rock musical. All singing and musical performances are to be delivered with a punk sensibility. An accompanist will be provided.

SEEKING:

Sue (Sue-icide):
Late teens to play 16, Caucasian. A sheltered teenage incest victim from the suburbs. An innocent schoolgirl who retreats from her abusive father through self-cutting. Shy and withdrawn but eager to explore, and with an inner strength and toughness that allows her to transform into an empowered, take-charge street punk. Alto, versatile lead singer, strong punk belter with powerful low range, prefer belt up to D.

Mom:
Late 20s, early 30s, any ethnicity. A bad-ass riot girl and the matriarch of the street tribe. She is the maternal influence on the street kids, acting as their pimp/protector as well as their moral compass. A proud practitioner of BDSM, she is bawdy, overtly sexual, controlling and unapologetic. She wields her power with a mix of maternal nurturing and implied threat. She is Sue's guide through the world of street punk. Alto, versatile lead and ensemble singer, strong punk belter with powerful low range.

PD:
18-22, any ethnicity. A flamboyant, witty, gutter-fag street punk. Charismatic, campy and self-aware, he is a snarky street hustler with a brain. Uses sarcasm and wit to hide his overwhelming desire to be cared for. Wide range tenor or Bari-tenor, prefer low G to high A, low notes flexible, strong punk lead and ensemble singer.

Sue's Father:
Late 30s, early 40s, Caucasian a police officer. Bored with his unfulfilling marriage, he has turned his sexual attention towards his daughter. He treats Sue with a mix of gentleness, eroticism and heavy-handedness, which keeps her off guard and under his thumb. While his actions are reprehensible, he believes he is committing the ultimate act of affection towards his daughter. Baritone, strong lead singer

Sue's Mother:
Late 30s, Caucasian, a suburban mother, but in the mold of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Trapped in an unhappy marriage, aware of the abuse that is going on under her roof, but unable or unwilling to stop it. She harbors a twisted jealousy of Sue for the attention she is receiving from her husband. Soprano or Mezzo, strong lead singer.

2 Fates/Hobos:
1 woman, 1 man, early 20s, any ethnicity. Our Greek chorus. The Fates act as our guide through Sue's story, commenting on the action and setting the tone for the storytelling. They are an omniscient presence, smart, sassy, and with a well-developed sense of irony. The Fates/Hobos double as various street folks, cops, etc. Must be good with harmony. Versatile and strong punk lead and ensemble singers. Females are both Alto/Mezzos with strong low ranges. Male is a Tenor or Bari-Tenor
