SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
By Jane Austin, adapted by Kate Hamill
Dir: Eric Tucker
Reh 8/23-9/11, Runs 9/13–10/23/16

Performed with British accents.

ELINOR DASHWOOD
20s -early 30s. Eldest sister. Sensible; a caregiver. Intelligent, highly responsible; always tries to do the right thing. Perhaps a little too inclined to follow rules. Much of the considerable burden of managing her family’s future falls on her shoulders. Very aware of economic/social realities; sometimes; afraid to let herself hope for more than she may be able to get. Rich inner life; feels far more than she may let on. Huge, sensitive heart under all of that propriety.

MARIANNE DASHWOOD
20s: Middle sister. Sensitive; feels everything VERY strongly. Romantic, impetuous – perhaps a little too inclined to break the rules. Smart, but prone to impulse and getting carried away by drama. Stubborn about principles to the point of being occasionally careless about others’ feelings.

MARGARET DASHWOOD
10–13 yrs old: Youngest sister. Desperate to be grown-up & included. Bit sheltered; probably read one too many romantic novels –has very definite ideas about love & romance.

MRS. DASHWOOD
late 40s-50s: Their Mother. Loving, good-natured, highly principled, protective of her daughters. Optimist. Little ignorant of financial realities in life; was sheltered until husband’s death. Can get bit carried away by drama of the moment.

JOHN DASHWOOD
mid 30s-early 40s: Dashwood sisters' Half-brother from their father’s side; Wealthy. Not a bad man, but weak-willed. Has good intentions, but entirely subservient to wife FANNY, whom he views extremely charitable and wise.

EDWARD FERRARS
Role CAST. (30s-40s): a gentleman.

FANNY DASHWOOD
Any age: John Dashwood's wife; Edward's sister. Wealthy; born/married into money. Very protective of her family to point of extreme harshness with rest of the world. Materialistic. Capable of benevolent (or not-so-benevolent) condescension. Fancies herself charitable.

COLONEL BRANDON
45+. Older, very wealthy bachelor. Quiet, restrained. Highly principled, honorable. Heart was terribly broken in past, never quite gotten over it

JOHN WILLOUGHBY
Unusually handsome, 20s-30s: A true Romantic hero; dashing, irresistibly charming. Impulsive; perhaps bit too inclined to break the rules. Has dark side that strives to keep hidden, but not a bad man; has made mistakes he’d rather not think about. Pleasure-seeking, occasionally to point of selfishness or irresponsibility; fundamentally wants to be liked.

SIR JOHN MIDDLETON
40s+: Country gentleman; distant relation to Mrs. Dashwood. Mrs. Jennings' Son-in-law, with whom he frequently conspires in their favorite occupation: matchmaking & general busybody-hood. Boisterously, cheerfully inclined to stick his nose in everything; convinced it is all good fun.

MRS. JENNINGS
50s+: Monstrously good-natured, boisterous woman; Sir John's mother-in-, Lady Middleton's mother. Terror to the countryside. Takes UNSPEAKABLE joy in spying out “secret” love affairs –much to the surprise of the accused parties and matchmaking. Genuinely good-hearted, generous woman with not a pretentious or classist bone in her body. Completely & utterly indiscreet & unsubtle, even when she thinks she is being very sly.

LUCY STEELE
20s: From no fortune. Clever, can be quite manipulative. Always observing/adjusting tactics accordingly; almost always knows what’s going on. Determined to marry well; it’s her only way to escape abject poverty. Inclined to hide aggression behind a mask of civility. Bit of social climber; knows who has most power in room. Not afraid to be insincere to curry favor. Can be cruel if can get away with it.

ANNE STEELE
20s: Lucy’s sister. Charitably, very odd duck; uncharitably, an absolute nightmarish ball of flitting, man-obsessed, clueless babble. Big-mouthed, unintelligent. Not good at reading social cues. Indiscreet is mildest term imaginable. Chief interest is beaus; second is beaus; third is beaus. Very cowed by her sister.

LADY MIDDLETON
30s-40s: VERY over-bred, uptight lady; centuries of selective breeding & overcompensation for her mother’s vulgarity have turned her into a grotesque example of too much restraint.

ROBERT FERRARS
Role CAST. (20s-30s)

Also doubled:
GOSSIPS 1–5 — a chorus of high-society creatures.
SERVANTS — including THOMAS (Cockney).
DOCTOR – a country doctor.
