BREAKDOWN

[ALAN STRANG]
ALAN STRANG – 18+ to play 17. He is a young man of 17 years, working-class British. He has unleashed an act of horrific violence by blinding six horses, with a metal spike, in the course of a single evening. He has been committed to a mental hospital for observation, and is being treated by a psychiatrist. At first he is totally resistant to any conversation, prying, or treatment, responding to questions by quoting commercial jingle songs he learned from television. He stares, he glares, he threatens. And yet, something about this man-boy is magnetic and obviously in need of salvation. He has nightmares and screams in his sleep. He is fascinated by extreme religious images of violence and torture. He is sexually thrilled by the presence of horses. In fits of ecstasy, he beats himself with a wooden hanger. He smokes and swears, and yet has the qualities of an unformed youngster, still infantilized. He is masculine but vulnerable, bright and wily, but unlearned and poorly educated. The role requires an actor of experience, emotional availability, and physical dexterity and stamina, undoubtedly older than the 17 years of the character. Full nudity in one scene.

[FRANK STRANG]
FRANK STRANG – He is the father of Alan Strang, a teenager who has been committed to a mental hospital for blinding six horses with a metal spike. He is British, basically educated, has a steady job at a printer’s shop. Reads leftist newspapers. He is a Socialist, and rails against the “upper classes”. He won’t allow a television in the house because he considers it a dangerous drug that drains the mind of intelligence and independent thinking. He is strict at home, but not unkind to his family. He loves them, but is very sure of his world view. He married a woman from a higher level of society and breeding and it is a point of conflict for the family. He does not believe in organized religion, considering it an “opiate of the people” in the Marxist point of view. He works for a printing press and is frustrated by his teenaged son’s lack of interest in reading and learning. He is also appalled by his son’s fascination with grotesque religious imagery. Age 45-50. Impatient and inflexible, as he feels a good father should be. He hides a secret through the play, and is afraid that he has somehow triggered his son’s act of violence.
