Breakdown

The play is set at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys where a young black man knows what is expected of him – hard work, to fall in line and use your voice to praise God in the school choir. The singing is acapella.

Seeking:

BOBBY MARROW: To play 16. African-American. Junior student, choir member, nephew to
the headmaster. Arrogant, confrontational, entitled. An alpha male. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns. He has a strong gospel tenor. There may be partial nudity.

DAVID HEARD: To play 17. African-American. Senior student, choir member. Religious – planning to be minister. A peace-maker, usually a boy of few words. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns and is a tenor with a great handle vocally in falsetto. Must be a storyteller (His Love Ballad is a major solo moment in the show.) There may be partial nudity.

JUNIOR BLAKE: To play 16. African-American. Junior student, choir member. The most innocent of the boys. Bobby’s milder sidekick. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns. He is a baritone and must sing in a contemporary style, not legit. There may be partial nudity.

HEADMASTER MARROW: Early 40s to late 50s. African-American. The youngest and latest Headmaster at The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys. Dedicated to maintaining the high standards and mission of his school. Devoted, committed, impassioned. A man with heart who leads with tough love. BOBBY MARROW’S uncle. He has a commanding baritone.

MR. PENDLETON: Late 60s to early 70s. White male. Returning professor at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys. Teaches African American History. Avuncular in nature with life experience to share. Humble and down-to-earth. Challenges his students to think beyond their immediate perceptions of the world they live in. He doesn’t sing in the show at all.
