Breakdown

NOTE: FOLLOWING A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED RUN LAST SEASON AT THE YORK THEATRE, CAGNEY IS BEING PRODUCED FOR AN OPEN ENDED COMMERCIAL RUN AT THE WESTSIDE THEATRE ON WEST 43RD ST.

SYNOPSIS: CAGNEY is an original musical about the life of film legend and award winning song and dance man, James Cagney. He came from the mean streets of New York to become an accomplished “hoofer” and the cinema’s quintessential tough guy. This is an intimate portrait of the man, his art and politics, his love of family and his enormous generosity.

Seeking immediate casting for understudies and future replacements for all roles. All performing Roles are currently cast. All must be great tap dancers (except jack warner)

JAMES CAGNEY:
(Currently played by ROBERT CREIGHTON)
Seeking great tap dancer, showman, versatile actor, tough guy, and singer. James Cagney, son of Irish immigrants grew up on the lower east side where he was a street fighter, went on to be a song and dance man in vaudeville, and gain fame on the Silver Screen as a larger than life Gangster and a “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”

JACK WARNER
(40’s/50’s)
Plays the charismatic head of Warner Brothers Studios and others. Great comic timing, ruthless with a big smile. Bari-tenor with a strong F-sharp (negotiable). An F is non –negotiable. Shyster, fast talker, in charge type. Think Jerry Orbach in Chicago. No dancing required.

BILL CAGNEY
(30’s/40’s): GREAT TAP DANCER
Plays the brother of James Cagney and Cagney’s level headed business manager and other roles (including a foreman, a screen writer, a vaudevillian, a contract player for Warner Bros. etc.) Bari-tenor to an F.

BOB HOPE
(30’s/40’s): GREAT TAP DANCER
Plays the famous comedian and song and dance movie star and others (including a Congressman, a screen writer, a studio contract player, etc.) Tenor to a G.

MA CAGNEY
(30’s/40’s): GREAT TAP DANCER
Plays James Cagney’s Irish mother and JANE (Jack Warner’s smitten secretary). Also plays others (including Ma Barker, a Screen writer, a Congressperson, etc.) Strong belter with head voice. A great mezzo soprano.

WILLIE CAGNEY
(early to late 30’s): GREAT TAP DANCER
Plays James Cagney’s loving beautiful wife. Also plays others (including a Congressperson, a Screen Writer, Mae Clarke, etc.) First seen as a sensational tap dancing vaudeville ingénue. Very strong singer: mix to a D flat with a strong head voice above. Being 5’5” or under is a plus.
