Breakdown
BIG LOVE: Fifty brides flee their fifty grooms and seek refuge in an Italian villa in this modern re-making of one of the world's oldest plays, The Danaids by Aeschylus. Mayhem ensues, complete with grooms in flight suits, women throwing themselves to the ground, occasional pop songs and romantic dances - even a bride falling in love. Big Love is a colossal, poetic work that explores the hunger for independence, the burden of tradition, and the shape and size of love.
SEEKING:
**NOTE: For the characters of LYDIA, OLYMPIA, THYONA, NIKOS, CONSTANTINE, OED and GIULANO in particular, we are seeking actors who are physically bold and fearless. There will be a strong movement component to the production.
LYDIA
Female, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. The ‘hero’ of the play. The daughter of a judge/lawyer, she is able to reason, but is also in touch emotionally. A liberated woman. Sexy. Must be physically agile. Ideally, should be a singer. Partial nudity may be involved.
OLYMPIA
Female, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. Smart and sophisticated, she plays a self-consciously post-feminist ‘Barbie’. Enjoys and knows to use all-things feminine. Sexy. Must be physically agile. Ideally, should be a singer. Partial nudity may be involved.
THYONA
Female , to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. Fierce, intelligent, political, with the capacity for aggression. Based on the writings of Andy Warhol shooter Valerie Solanas. Sexy. Must be physically agile. Ideally, should be a singer. Partial nudity may be involved.
NIKOS
Male, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. The good guy. May have been an athlete in school, but also a good student. He is a young leading man who is not yet fully formed. Sexy. Must be physically agile. Singing ability a plus. Partial nudity may be involved.
CONSTANTINE
Male, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. Exudes aggressive and entitled machismo. Knows what he wants and will take it by force, if necessary. Sexy. Must be physically agile. Singing ability a plus. Partial nudity may be involved.
OED
Male, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. A man of few words, but incredible physical strength and agility. Sexy. Could be a former athlete/gymnast/circus performer. Throws saw blades into a wall repeatedly. Partial nudity may be involved.
GIULANO
Male, to play 20s, ANY ETHNICITY. Raised in Italy, lives with his parents in the villa—Piero’s nephew. A bit of an innocent. Open-hearted and emotionally connected. Should play the piano, violin or cello. Partial nudity may be involved.
PIERO
Male, to play mid 40s to mid 50s. Italian. Connected, wealthy, runs in elite social circles. Hospitable, charming and powerful. A natural head of family.
BELLA
Female, to play 60s to early 70s. Italian. Warm and vital, but should feel old enough to believably be Piero’s mother. Singing ability a plus.
ELEANOR
Female, to play 50ish, ANY ETHNICITY. British. Good socializer. Warm. Intelligent and upper class, but not a snob.
LEO
Male, to play 50s, ANY ETHNICITY. Italian. Represents the ‘Father of the Brides’ in a way, dances with the girls.
