Breakdown

SEEKING:

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
African-American man, mid 30’s. The great Civil Rights leader and conscience of the nation. Has a brilliant mind and a powerful presence. He’s charismatic, insightful, and resilient, but no plaster saint: MLK is also funny, passionate, and a very shrewd political operator in his own right. He’s trying to keep the Movement alive through impossible tradeoffs and maneuverings, each of which weighs heavily upon him.

J. EDGAR HOOVER/AS CAST
Caucasian man, late 60’s. The infamous FBI Director, whose paranoia and desire for power leads him to sanction massive corruption and illegal surveillance. His extensive files on everyone in Washington make him dangerous, but he’s terrified of losing his position and influence. Hoover is vain and fussy, but a formidable opponent.

GOVENOR GEORGE WALLACE/MICHAEL SCHWERNER/KING OF NORWAY/AS CAST
WALLACE: Caucasian male, mid 40’s. The racist Governor of Alabama, an outspoken, brash, colorful political opportunist and thorn in LBJ’s side. Wallace is a rising political star, savvy, humorous and self-aware.
SCHWERNER: Caucasian male, mid 20’s. CORE field worker.

REVEREND RALPH ABERNATHY/AS CAST

WALTER JENKINS/AS CAST
Caucasian male, mid 40s. LBJ’s loyal, long-suffering and indispensable Chief of Staff. Has been with LBJ since the beginning and is a kind of surrogate son. A closeted homosexual.

SENATOR HUBERT HUMPHREY/STROM THURMOND/AS CAST

THURMOND
Caucasian male, early 60’s. Democrat from SC. Key member of the Southern Caucus. Known for his vitriolic racist language and extreme views on segregation.

STOKELY CARMICHAEL/JAMES HARRISON/AS CAST
CARMICHAEL: African-American male, early 20s. Brilliant and fiery SNCC field organizer. Bold and unimpressed by authority. A strong advocate for the increasingly more militant approach to the civil rights movement.
HARRISON: African-American male, 30’s. SCLC accountant.

SENATOR RICHARD RUSSELL/AS CAST
Caucasian male, mid 60’s. Democrat from GA. Courtly but canny leader of the Dixiecrats. Unalterably opposed to integration. LBJ’s political mentor.

ROBERT MCNAMARA/SEN. JAMES EASTLAND/REP. WILLIAM M. MCCULLOCH/GOV. PAUL B. JOHNSON JR./ AS CAST
