BREAKDOWN

From one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming playwrights comes this poignant world premiere about three generations of women and the legacies they inherit. In the 1950s, teenager Madeleine runs away to New York with hopes of becoming a dancer. Twenty years later, her own headstrong daughter Max, a wannabe cowboy, rebels against the same small-town Massachusetts life that drove her mother away. Fast forward 30 more years, and Max’s daughter Nix travels the country as a musician, chasing a fantasy that may or may not be her own. As the daughters face the ripple effect of their mothers’ choices, they wrestle with their own half-buried dreams and desires in this coming-of-age story. (This is a play with music).

SEEKING:

MADELEINE, also plays ADE (Female, 30s, any race/ethnicity)
MADELINE is a driven young woman from a small town with enough courage and imagination to set her sights on a life as a ballerina in NYC. This role requires an honest youth that avoids hackneyed ideas of naivete or simple-minded young girls, but rather is a young woman with a true lack of life or romantic experience, which helps drive the character's pursuit of both these things. ADE is the opposite - has a real wild streak and has lived thru a lot more. Intensely loyal and charismatic, yet has the capacity to be ruthless. Ability to sing or play an instrument and having good rhythm are a plus.

MAX, also plays CATHY + MERCY (Female, 30s, any race/ethnicity)
The actor playing MAX should effortlessly embody a kind of misfit/oddball, with the emotional tenor of someone who has lived their whole young life always a bit on the sidelines. This character is someone you'd believe is best friends with Phoenix, a true rebel, but Max probably doesn't wear her rebellious side on the outside quite as strongly. CATHY, is a big-hearted but world-weary woman. MERCY is a roadie musician, has a real wild streak. Intensely loyal and charismatic, yet has the capacity to be ruthless. Ability to sing or play an instrument and having good rhythm are a plus.

MICHAEL, PHOENIX, TRACE (Male, 30s, any race/ethnicity)
An actor who can embody the essential trustworthiness of MICHAEL, the pleasure-seeking free spirit and sexual fluidity of PHOENIX, along with the intoxicating mystery and sensitive emotional depth of TRACE. We are looking for an actor who can play all of these roles with an internal depth and honesty, shifting the internal rhythms of each character and distinguishing them thru deep yet subtle choices about their differing ages, life experiences, and relationships to the people around them. Ability to sing or play an instrument and having good rhythm are a plus.
