The Dio Announces 2016 Theatre Season

The Dio - Dining & Entertainment is excited to announce their 2016 theatre season which includes two plays, three musicals, and a South East Michigan professional premiere!

The year kicks off with The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play, Proof, by David Auburn, directed by Steve DeBruyne, running February 4 through March 13.

On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness-or genius-will she inherit?

The first musical of our 2016 brings a South East Michigan premiere to our stage with Rock of Ages by Chris D'Arienzo, directed by Steve DeBruyne with musical direction by Brian Rose, running April 14 through May 22.

Rock of Ages takes you back to the times of big bands with big egos playing big guitar solos and sporting even bigger hair! This Tony Award -nominated Broadway musical features the hits of bands including Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, and many more! The original Broadway production ran for over 2000 shows, and featured performances by Broadway and television stars alike! Now, fresh from the Broadway closing, you can catch this hilarious, head banging musical at The Dio!

Next, we're bringing back our hit production of The Last Five Years, which ran for only 3 sold out performances in May of 2015, for another limited engagement, starring Steve DeBruyne and Thalia Schramm, running June 2 to June 18 for only 8 performances.

The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show's unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show. Bring a Kleenex...actually, bring a box of Kleenex.

Following that emotional roller coaster, you're going to want to laugh, and we've got just the trick when The Dio presents Greater Tuna by Ed Howard, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams, running July 14 through August 21.

What do Arles Struvie, Thurston Wheelis, Aunt Pearl, Petey Fisk, Phineas Blye, Rev. Spikes and a Chihuahua have in common? In this hilarious send-up of small town morals and mores, they are all among the upstanding citizens of Tuna, Texas' third smallest town, and they're all played by the same two actors! Get ready to laugh out loud as Dio favorites Steve DeBruyne and Jared Schneider bring over 20 of the citizens of Tuna, Texas to life on our stage in Greater Tuna!

Then, heat up the cool fall temperatures with a trip to Berlin as The Dio presents the classic Kander and Ebb musical, Cabaret, directed by Steve DeBruyne with musical direction by Brian Rose, running September 22 through October 30.

It's 1930s, Berlin. The Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage at the Kit Kat Klub nightly to tantalize the crowd. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, the club, a metaphor for the threatening state of Nazi dominated Germany, begins to fall apart. Featuring some of musical theater's most recognizable tunes, including "Maybe This Time", "Wilkommen", and "Don't Tell Mama", Cabaret will take you back in time. In the words of our emcee, "Leave your troubles outside."

Finally, we're continuing a Christmas tradition when The Dio brings back our original musical, Home for the Holidays, running November 25 through December 31.

When the cast of Home for the Holidays gathers for their Christmas Eve performance, Stage Manager, Nick and his wife expect a smooth evening of seasonal fun. What they get is a leading lady who has locked herself in her dressing room, her understudy who isn't quite up to the job, and a leading man whose holiday spirit is closer to that of the Grinch than Kris Kringle. This "goody basket of holiday cheer" takes you backstage with the cast, as Nick tries to reinstate their faith in the holidays with a lot of Christmas spirit and a touch of magic. The whole family will love this salute to family and friends, and good old fashioned, holiday joy! Featuring over 20 of your favorite holiday tunes, you're guaranteed to leave the theatre singing the praises of being "home for the holidays!"

Ticket prices for The Dio's 2016 season include dinner, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverages, plus a night of live entertainment that you won't forget! Adult seats are $42, seniors and students are $39, and children 12 and under are $38. Groups of 20 or more are only $38, and can be booked by calling our box office.
