The Des Moines Community Playhouse play reading series continues on Monday, Apr. 6, at 7:00 PM with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's "The Velvet Sky." The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.

"The Velvet Sky" follows poor Bethany Palmer, a woman who hasn't slept in thirteen years. When her husband, Warren, suddenly steals their son, Andrew, away in the middle of the night, her already delicate grip on reality starts to crumble-even as she sets off after them on a nightmarish phantasmagoria through an urban dreamscape. Chronicling Bethany's desperate journey, "The Velvet Sky" is a grim fairytale for grown-ups, about the stories and lies adults tell children to keep them safe from the things that lurk in the dark.

"The Velvet Sky" is directed by Sarah Hinzman and features Micheal Davenport, Libby Holland, Kenny Lawson, Charlie Reese, Timothy Rodriguez, and E.B. Updegraff.

The play reading series is held one night each month on the stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces. Upcoming shows in the Play Reading Series are "Choices" by local playwright Karen Schaeffer on May 4 and "Lobster Alice" by Kira Obolensky on June 1.

The Play Reading Series offers directing and acting experience for people who may not have time for a full rehearsal period, while introducing our audiences to one-of-a-kind scripts that they would not otherwise be able to experience. An added benefit is that the theatre occasionally reads scripts that are under consideration for production on the Mainstage. "Red" (2013-14 Season) and "Girls' Weekend" (2014-15 Season) were introduced as staged readings.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
