Uptown Players, a professional theater group located in the Uptown area of Dallas, announces a one-act play writing competition for 2016.

In memory of long-time volunteer and Uptown Players supporter, Perry Thompson, Uptown Players Dallas Pride Performing Arts Festival invites submissions of original manuscripts that deal with issues or characters that are identified as gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender or contain a gay sensibility. Two winners will receive cash awards and have their plays produced during the 2016 Pride Performing Arts Festival in September. The 2016 Pride Write One-Act Play-Writing Competition is made possible through the generous support of the Greg Grosh Charitable Fund.

The contest is open to individuals who are at least 18-years-old and live in North Texas. To be accepted into the competition, one-act scripts must be original, unpublished, not previously produced for revenue and have not generated royalties for the playwright (plays that have received staged readings are permitted). The plays must contain LGBT themes, characters or relevance and have a minimum run time of 30-minutes, but no more than 75-minutes.

Entries will be accepted beginning April 23, which happens to be William Shakespeare's birthday, with a deadline of May 2, 2016. Submissions must be emailed as a PDF and written in play format using a 12-point font. A nonrefundable entry fee of $20 must be paid prior to the submission deadline. Playwrights will be notified via email when their submission is received. Plays selected for the final round of judging will be notified no later than July 1, 2016.

The top two plays will be produced in the 2016 Dallas Pride Performing Arts Festival in September and will be judged in performance by a new jury. Winners will be announced on the festival's final night (see Prizes below). Playwrights will be notified no later than July 15, 2016 if their play is selected for production.

The People's Choice winner will receive a cash prize of $250.

The Second Place winner will receive a cash prize of $500.

The First Place winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000.

Email PDF play submissions to 2016PrideWrite@gmail.com. For complete details and submission requirements, visit www.uptownplayers.org.

Representations and Warranties:

Scripts not in compliance with Competition Rules and Submission Procedure will not be accepted for judging.

The submitted work must be wholly original and not violate the rights of any person or entity.

In the event fewer than 15 entries are received by the deadline date, Uptown Players has the right to cancel the contest. In the event of cancellation, entry fees will be refunded.

By making a submission to the Pride Write competition, the playwright agrees to all the terms and conditions listed above.
