In A Life of the Mind, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Sam Shepard depicts the aftermath of a romance torn apart by spousal abuse and the war that breaks out between two families. A Lie of the Mind depicts the many ways that the mind protects the heart.

Sam Shepard, who boasts a long standing reputation as one of America's foremost playwrights, begin his career in the 1960's and has spent many successful seasons with off-off-Broadway groups such as La Mama and Caffe Cino and the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. In 1979 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Buried Child, and in 1984 he gained an Oscar nomination for his part as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff. Other plays include La Turista (1967), Mad Dog Blues (1971), The Tooth of Crime (1972), True West (1980), Simpatico (1993) and Eyes for Consuela (1998). In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 1992 he received the Gold Medal for Drama from the Academy. In 1994 he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame
