WaterTower Theatre Producing Artistic Director Terry Martin today announced a special one-night only performance of the hit storytelling series, Oral Fixation: An Obsession with True Life Tales, the Best of Season 3, at the Addison Theatre Centre Main Stage on Tuesday, September 16 at 8 pm. Scroll down for a sneak peek at the performers!
Dallas' hit storytelling series Oral Fixation (An Obsession with True Life Tales) will present seven stories from the "Best of Season 3." The "Best of Season 3" are the favorite stories that were selected by hundreds of Oral Fixation fans. The stories include a moving piece on childbirth told from the father's point of view, a revealing evening at a naked sketch party, a nightlong chase involving hunting dogs on a cold Ohio night, and a "There's Something About Mary" style first date. The storytellers will be Bryon Sanders ("Bun in the Oven"), Allison Hatfield ("When in Rome"), Drew Weininger ("Silver Lining"), Jamie Laughlin ("No Strings Attached"), Melissa Smrekar ("Elephant in the Room"), Blake Friis ("Ducks in a Row"), and Amanda Rodenborg ("The Whole Enchilada").
Oral Fixation, presented by Nicole Stewart, is a series of hour-long evenings of true, personal stories, each with a new theme performed by a cross-section of seven Dallasites. Oral Fixation's mission is to bring together the Dallas community through sharing true, personal stories. The seed that grew into Oral Fixation was first planted in Los Angeles when then-actress Nicole Stewart's agent dumped her. Shortly thereafter, Nicole met several producers of Spark Off Rose, who encouraged her to attend one of their monthly storytelling events in Santa Monica. It was then that she fell in love with the medium of real people sharing their true life stories onstage. The next step was for Nicole to share one of her own stories at Spark...and Oral Fixation was born. Nicole moved back to her hometown Dallas in 2009 after 12 years away. She yearned for the magic of storytelling to bring her close again to the Dallas community. Over the next year, she explored different pockets of Dallas society: theatre and film communities, the art scene, society, and more. Everyone around her seemed excited by all the changes happening in Dallas and so what better time than to reintroduce Dallas to the ancient art of storytelling. Luck would have it that agent Lacy Lynch, a young literary agent, came into Nicole's life. The two produced The Most: A Night of Stories at the historic Magnolia Lounge in Fair Park in 2011. The beta test was a success! What Oral Fixation brings to the table that makes it stand out is twofold: first, every theme is an idiom in the English language, a phrase we use often that has both a literal and a figurative meaning. Secondly, the evening of stories is curated and edited by Nicole. She solicits submissions from the general public by publishing her season of themes in advance along with suggestions as to potential takes on the theme. Then, from the submissions, she selects a variety of points of view (different ages, genders, races, etc.) to create an hour-long evening of stories that will take the audience on a ride from laughing in recognition of shared experiences to poignant moments of courageous exposure of flaws to laugh-out loud moments that would seem too good to be true.
