Dallas Theater Center Presents Rolling World Premiere of COLOSSAL, Now thru 5/3

Dallas Theater Center announced today complete details for the rolling world premiere of Colossal, a new play by Andrew Hinderaker. DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty directs the Kennedy Center Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award-winning play, which is choreographed by founder and artistic director of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance Joshua L. Peugh. Colossal begins with previews tonight, April 2 with a Pay-What-You-Can performance and runs through Sunday, May 3. Tickets to Colossal are on sale now at www.DallasTheaterCenter.org.

"Colossal is a stunning new play that simply can't be contained; it leaps off the page and come to life with intense theatricality, featuring the physicality of football, the grace of modern dance, and the bold rhythms of a drumline," said Moriarty. "Though the play is incredibly grand in scope, its heart is found in intimate moments exploring relationships on the field between teammates and coach, and off the field between father and son."

Colossal puts audiences on the fifty yard line in the Wyly Theatre in this new play by Hinderaker, a University of Texas graduate. Colossal, an intimate and epic story about the nation's most popular sport, features a bold and never-before-seen new configuration in the Wyly Theatre's Potter Rose Performance Hall, a drumline and full-contact choreography by Joshua L. Peugh. The story centers on a University of Texas football player, struggling to move forward in the wake of a catastrophic spinal injury. Colossal is about love, ability, and extraordinary feats of strength, and is both a celebration and critical examination of our nation's most popular form of theater. Colossal is being produced as a rolling world premiere by Olney Theatre Center (Maryland), Mixed Blood Theatre (Minneapolis), Dallas Theater Center (Texas) and Southern Rep (Louisiana) as part of the National New Play Network's Continued Life Program.

Zack Weinstein makes his DTC debut as Mike, the football player injured during a game. The full cast for Colossal includes Khris Davis as Marcus, a player with whom Mike has a close relationship; Brierley Resident Acting Company member Hassan El-Amin (Driving Miss Daisy, LES MISERABLES) as the high-intensity Coach; DTC associate artistic director Joel Ferrell as Damon, Mike's father; Alex Stoll as Young Mike, the man before the accident; and Brierley Resident Acting Company member Steven Michael Walters (The Book Club Play, LES MISERABLES) as Jerry, Mikes physical therapist. Players are Keith Clark II; David Cross; Harry Feril; Southern Methodist University graduate student Taylor Harris; Southern Methodist University undergraduate Nick Miller; Travis Miller; Michael Odiari; Rico Romalus Parker; Blake Zelesnikar; and Will Adams (swing). Members of the drumline are Chris Ball; Jeremy Gomez; Scott Gustafson; Morgan Palmer; and Shane Snyder.

Creating the testosterone-filled, high energy world of football and dance in Colossal are scenic designer John Coyne (LES MISERABLES, Henry IV); costume designer Jennifer Caprio (Medea; The Odd Couple); Tony Award-winning lighting designer Jeff Croiter (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Arsenic and Old Lace); and sound designer Brian McDonald (Medea; The Book Club Play). Additional members of the team are movement consultant Bill Lengfelder and football consultant Noel Scarlett.

For this production the Wyly Theatre will be transformed into a football field, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for DTC patrons. Seating will be General Admission. Patrons will be seated according to the area number located in the middle of their ticket. Area 1 will be seated first and seating will continue through Area 4. Patrons are welcome to arrive earlier and wait in their Area's line to help ensure the best seat possible.

The production runs 90 minutes with no intermission. There will be no late seating, and if a patron leaves the theater space for any reason during the show, he or she will not be readmitted. Food and drink will be permitted in the performance.

All performances of Colossal will take place at the Wyly Theatre, located at 2400 Flora St., where it runs April 2 - May 3, 2015. Colossal begins previews on Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm with a Pay-What-You-Can performance. The press opening will take place on Friday, April 10 at 8:00pm. DTC's Come Early sponsored by Wells Fargo will take place one hour before every performance and will be led by Steven Michael Walters. Patrons will have the opportunity to learn about the play prior to viewing the production. DTC's Stay Late presented by Dr Pepper Snapple will take place after each performance and will be led by Joel Ferrell. Patrons will have the opportunity to engage with artists, learn about the production and share insights about the play in a lively discussion. One of the leading regional theaters in the country, Dallas Theater Center (DTC) performs to an audience of more than 120,000 North Texas residents annually. BIOGRAPHIES:

Will Adams (Swing) is a BA candidate for theatre with a focus in performance at the University of North Texas. He has been seen in a handful of productions at UNT and upon graduation he will attend graduate school to pursue his MFA in acting. Will is honored and truly blessed to be working on his first professional play in the theater.

Chris Ball (Drumline: Bass Drum) is currently 17 years old, and in his junior year at Wakeland High School in Frisco, TX. He has been a member of the Wakeland Band since 2012, performing on bass drum in the marching band. As part of his musical studies for concert band, Chris attended the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest while also playing drum set with his local garage band. An avid fan of the performing arts, he plans to study sound recording technology, and could not be more thrilled to be a part of Colossal!

Keith Clark II (Player) has been instructing, performing and choreographing for 30 years. Professional credits include: Stagger Lee workshop (DTC), Albertson's Anniversary Sale commercial, Atlanta Dance Connection, and many more. Keith has set choreography for the NBA's Indiana Pacemates and Dallas Maverick dancers, the Arena Football League's Dallas Desperados, and the WNBA's Indiana Fever. David Cross (Player) is a native of Kansas City, MO., where he began his dance career as a b-boy. He is a member of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance and a recent graduate of University of Missouri-Kansas City's Conservatory of Music and Dance, where he received a BFA in Dance performance with an emphasis in Ballet. He's performed in works by Gary Abbott, Paula Weber, and many others; and has worked in ballets, musicals, music videos, and the movie Three Blind Saints. David has toured with GX International in Australia and continues to compete in dance battles with his crew Boogie Munstars Family (BMF).

Khris Davis (Marcus) is thrilled to be a part of Colossal at DTC this season. Harry Feril (Player / Dance Captain) is a member of the Bruce Wood Dance Project, and is excited for his first project with DTC. Mr. Feril has performed works created by renowned choreographers/companies, such as: Robert Battle; Jessica Lang; Ruth Andrien; Kate Skarpetowska; Alison Chase; Grover Dale; Kanji Segawa; Troy Powell; Adam Hougland; Dwight Rhoden; Joshua Peugh; and most memorably Bruce Wood. Theater/Commercial credits include: West Side Story (Lyric Stage, Diesel), Mary Kay Cosmetics and Sally Beauty Supply national conventions, and Chili's and Chuck E. Cheese's television commercials.

Joel Ferrell (Damon) is Associate Artistic Director at DTC, where his directing/choreography credits include: The Rocky Horror Show; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Cabaret; A Christmas Carol (2005-2009, 2011, 2012). DTC directing credits include: Driving Miss Daisy; Clybourne Park; Red; God of Carnage; Dividing the Estate; reasons to be pretty; The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later; and Cotton Patch Gospel (starring its creator Tom Key). DTC choreography credits include: It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Who's Tommy; and My Fair Lady. DFW Credits: Gruesome Playground Injuries (Second Thought Theatre); Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and The Baltimore Waltz (Stage West); the premiere of Huck Finn by Lee Trull (Classical Acting Company). Mr. Ferrell has worked extensively around the country for Portland Center Stage, Papermill Playhouse, Ford's Theatre, Lyric Theater of Oklahoma and North Shore Music Theatre, among others.

Jeremy Gomez (Drumline: Snare Drum, Cymbals; Percussion Consultant) holds a music performance degree from the University of North Texas and is at forefront of several contemporary fields of percussion. A sought-after private instructor, writer, and drumline choreographer, Jeremy has taught nearly 1,000 young percussionists since 1998. Currently director of percussion for Wakeland High School and Cobb Middle School in Frisco, TX, he teaches drum set curriculum, drumline, world percussion, chamber music and beginners. As a Zildjian endorsed cymbal artist, Mr. Gomez has termed a unique method of defining motions and their applications to movement in the drum corp idiom.

Scott Gustafson (Drumline: Snare Drum) is a paraprofessional percussion specialist at Frisco High School and surrounding middle schools. While at the University of North Texas, he was involved with the Green Brigade Marching Band and the indoor drumline for multiple years, as well as the Steel Band; Gamelan Bwana Kumala; Symphonic Band; Symphony Orchestra; and various classical ensembles. He frequently performs with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. Scott marched with the Boston Crusaders in 2011, and was recently a member of the Rhythm & Blue Drumline for the Dallas Cowboys.

Taylor Harris (Player) is excited to be back on DTC's stage. He was seen last season in Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure and more recently, locally in Undermain Theatre's production of The Flick. He is an MFA candidate at SMU in his second year.

Nick Miller (Player) is a BFA candidate for theater with an acting specialization where credits include: Look Homeward, Angel; Richard III; Medea; Romeo and Juliet; Hairspray; K.C: Fire in the Hole; The Music Man. Theaters: Greer Garson Theatre; Kathy Bates Studio; SMU Outdoor Theater; Lone Star College; Houston's Center Stage Theater. Nick is excited about his first production with DTC.

Travis Miller (Player) was born in West Philadelphia where he lived until 1999 when he moved to Stillwater, MN. After moving to Minnesota he found a love for football. He attended college in North Dakota. Immediately following college, he started playing professional indoor football, which has taken him around the country. It has recently brought him to the Dallas area where he is training for a spot in the NFL. He is very excited to be a part of a play that depicts such a significant part of his life.

Michael Odiari (Player) is second among Sun Belt Conference (SBC) leaders and ranks 23rd nationally with 10.5 sacks this season. He was named the College Football Performance Awards' Sun Belt Defensive Lineman of the Week after recording a career best 4.5 sacks and 4.5 tackle for losses of 22 yards against Idaho. His 4.5 sacks are the second highest single game total in SBC history. Odiari was a captain for Texas State football, who leads the team in sacks and ranked third on the team in tackles and a recent Texas State graduate.

Morgan Palmer (Drumline: Cymbals) is a senior at Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas. She's been very involved in the drumline throughout her high school career, and has specifically gravitated towards mastering the art of cymbals. For two years, Morgan has assumed the role of Cymbal Captain and has led the organization to numerous awards and overwhelming success. She has grasped the beauty, strength, and grace of the art and is excited to be pursuing new performance opportunities in this area. She plans on majoring in speech pathology at the University of Arkansas.

Rico Romalus Parker (Player) is an L.A.-based actor who was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, where he attended the Wright State University acting program. He was nominated Best Lead Actor for the Column Awards for his portrayal as Booth in Topdog/ Underdog. Other favorite theater credits include: The Brothers Size; Blue Orange; A Raisin in the Sun; Every Tongue Confess; The Gammage Project; Passing Strange; The Legend of Buster Neal; The Exonerated; Full Bloom; and Ashes to Africa. Independent films: Other People; Blue Car; Scrollers; Baby's Journey; and Enough.

Shane Snyder (Drumline: Tenor Drum) has been in the marching percussion scene for 15 years, competing and teaching at a high level. In 2003 he competed at Percussive Art Society's International Convention, placing first in the marching tenor competition. Shane was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005-2007, winning the Fred Sanford High Percussion section award (2006). He's currently percussion instructor at Griffin Middle School in Frisco, TX and Guyer High School in Denton, TX. Shane has been a proud staff member of the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps since 2013.

Blake Zelesnikar (Player) is originally from upstate New York and grew up studying dance under the influence of Amber Perkins, the Director of Phoenix Project Dance Company. Recent credits include: Flashdance-The Musical (1st National Tour) and Rasta Thomas' Bad Boys of Dance in their hit show Rock The Ballet, where he was fortunate enough to perform all around the world.

Andrew Hinderaker (Playwright) is a proud ensemble member of the Gift Theatre in Chicago. His plays include: I Am Going to Change the World, Dirty, Kingsville, and Suicide, Incorporated, which premiered at the Gift and was subsequently produced Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre. Hinderaker's newest work includes The Magic Play (Goodman Theatre New Stages) and Colossal, which is currently enjoying a National New Play Network (NNPN) Rolling World Premiere, with productions at Dallas Theater Center, the Olney Theatre Center (Washington DC), Mixed Blood Theatre (Minneapolis), Company One (Boston), and Southern Rep (New Orleans). Collectively, Hinderaker's plays have been produced/developed by Dallas Theater Center, the Roundabout Theatre Company, the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf, Manhattan Theatre Club, the Araca Group, Victory Gardens, the Alliance Theatre, Rattlestick, ACT, and several others. As a television writer, Hinderaker recently sold a pilot about backup dancers to the CW, and currently works as a staff writer for the Showtime series, Penny Dreadful. Hinderaker holds an MFA in Playwriting from the University of Texas at Austin.

Kevin Moriarty (Director) is the artistic director of Dallas Theater Center, where his work as a director includes: It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman; The Who's Tommy; The Wiz; A Midsummer Night's Dream; Henry IV; The Tempest; Fat Pig; Next Fall; his original adaptation of A Christmas Carol; Oedipus el Rey; Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure; and most recently Medea and The School for Wives. Since 2007 he has led DTC through many new initiatives, including the move into the Wyly Theatre; the creation of the Brierley Resident Acting Company; an extensive series of new play productions; community collaborations with North Texas Food Bank, Dallas Holocaust Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, and most of theregion's theater companies; and multi-year partnerships with Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts and SMU Meadows School of the Arts. Before joining DTC, Kevin served as the artistic director of the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY, for seven years. From 2002-2007 Kevin was the Head of Directing for the Brown University/Trinity Rep MFA Program in Providence, RI, and he was an Associate Artist at Trinity Rep Company. He made his operatic directing debut with The Lighthouse for The Dallas Opera in 2012, and is directing The Marriage of Figaro in their 2014-2015 season. Kevin has served as a public school music teacher at La Crescent High School in La Crescent, MN, and as an Associate Professor at Brown University. Kevin is the Vice-Chair of the Dallas Arts District; a member of the Boards of Trustees for the Booker T. Washington Advisory Board, Theatre Communications Group, and the National Alliance for Musical Theatre; a member of the Dallas Assembly; a recipient of a Drama League directing fellowship; and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin.

Joshua L. Peugh (Choreographer) is the Founder and Artistic Director of Dark Circles Contemporary Dance. After graduating from Southern Methodist University, Joshua moved to South Korea to join Universal Ballet Company. Since then, he has created work for festivals in Asia, Europe, and North America winning awards for his choreography in Korea, Japan, Canada, and the USA. He has been chosen as one of Dance Magazine's 2015 "25 to Watch," and was recently named an "important discovery" by The New York Times. Joshua has been commissioned to create for BODYTRAFFIC, BalletX, Company E, and Whim W'Him among others.

He previously served as the production manager and technical director for Shakespeare Dallas and Technical Director for The University of North Texas Opera Theater. Design Work: Kitchen Dog Theater, Project X Theatre, and The Festival Ballet of North Central Texas. Brian spent several years working in higher education, holding positions at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. He also works as a recording engineer and producer with releases on Idol Records, GIA, Vandan Records, Elba Records, Drop6 Media, Equilibrium and more.

Bill Lengfelder (Movement Consultant) is a professor of movement at SMU, a certified teacher of the The Society of American Fight Directors, and a company member of both Kitchen Dog Theater and the Irish-based Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre. He has been a boxer, mime, professor, and stunt double for a dog in What's the Story, Wishbone?.

Noel Scarlett (Football Consultant) Originally from Fort Lauderdale, FL, after attending Langston University and being drafted in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings. Noel spent three years in the NFL. During the off-season spent a lot of time In the gym and on the field. It was then a natural transition to becoming a strength coach to tutor athletes. Noel has spent the last 12 years in the private sector as strength and conditioning coach. reparing 60+ athletes for the NFL COMBINE and individual PRO DAYS.

Barb Hicks (Production Manager) served as the Costume Shop Manager at Dallas Theater Center for many years prior to, most recently, leading the costume Department at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. She is enjoying her second season back at DTC, leading the Production Department through the exciting and thrilling adventure that is in store.

Adam Caldwell, CSA (New York Casting) works with Cindy Tolan. Thrilled to be at DTC again.
