A LIE OF THE MIND involves two desperate families connected by the marriage od the son of one (Jake) to the daughter of the other (Beth). Beth has been violently beaten - to the point of brain damage - by her overly jealous and slightly deranged husband Jake. Beth is first tended to by her brother Mike in the hospital and later by her parents, Baylor and Meg, at their house.

Jake's brother, Frankie, goes to Montana to see if Beth is dead or alive, but Baylor mistaking Frankie for a deer, shots hi in the leg and takes him prisoner. Thereafter the tensions and enmities that motivate the two families grow increasingly disturbing and dangerous.

Beth falls in love with Frankie, but Mike is bitterly determined that she have nothing to do with anyone from her husband's family. Meanwhile the distraught and distrustful Jake, back home in California, is being nursed by his possessive Mother, Lorraine and his sister Sally, to whom Lorraine is openly hostile. Having gotten Jake back form Beth, Lorraine is determined to keep him with her forever. However, Jake can't stay and soon sets out to regain his wife.

Shepard's "A Lie of the Mind" truly examines what it means to be a family, and whether or not the family bond can truly tie individuals together.
