The Hartt School kicks off its Hartt Symphony Orchestra season with a concert of orchestral masterpieces conducted by
Edward Cumming on Saturday, October 1, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The program includes Dvo?ák's Carnival Overture, Haydn's Symphony No. 104 "London," and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5. A reception in honor of Maestro Cumming, Hartt's new Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities, follows the concert.
Hartt celebrates one of its legendary faculty members, Luiz de Moura Castro, with a weekend full of festivities, October 7 through October 9. Students, alumni, and faculty perform in honor of the renowned piano professor's 70th birthday and 35th year teaching at The Hartt School. The Hartt Wind Ensemble concert kicks off the celebration on Friday, October 7, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium. During this concert, Luiz will share his extraordinary talent with the Hartt Community by playing the
George Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue. Luiz de Moura Castro and Friends Recital will take place on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, with a special pre-concert dinner taking place at the University's 1877 Club. The Hartt School is proud to present the Emerson String Quartet, performing the first concert of the 2011-2012 Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, on Thursday, October 13, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. With more than 30 albums for Deutsche Grammophon and nine Grammy Awards to its credit, the Emerson is the world's most celebrated and honored quartet. In residence at The Hartt School for more than 20 years, the group returns to play its first concert on our campus in a decade. As a highlight of the evening, University of Hartford president
Walter Harrison will bestow on the quartet members - Philip Setzer, Eugene Drucker, Lawrence Dutton and

Hartt Chamber Winds performs on Friday, November 4, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This concert features members of the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band performing masterworks for chamber winds that include a new arrangement by Hartt trumpet teacher Jay Lichtman of Warlock's Capriol Suite and the 20th century masterpiece Exotic Birds by Messiaen.

One of the most versatile and imaginative artists of our time, violinist Regina Carter will appear with her five-person ensemble to perform tracks from Reverse Thread, her recently-released, internationally acclaimed album of African roots music. A 2006 winner of a MacArthur Foundation award - the so-called "genius' grant - Ms. Carter is an iconic figure in contemporary American music. The third concert in the 2011-2012 Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series is a performance by the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) on Thursday, February 2, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This 17-member conductorless string orchestra has been hailed as "dramatic," "magically expressive," and "truly spectacular." ECCO's members - many still in their twenties - are among the most brilliant and sought-after young chamber players and freelance musicians in the country, devoted to reenergizing the concert experience, both for seasoned listeners and for classical newcomers. An Evening of Concerto Winners features some of the finest classical instrumental soloists at The Hartt School. This concert showcases four concerto competition winners, accompanied by the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Hartt's annual Collage Concert, which is free and open to the public, features continuous music, dance, and theatre. This concert features a world premiere by Hartt composition faculty member Stephen Gryc. The program also includes Michael Colgrass's Urban Requiem, which features a saxophone quartet and wind ensemble, and explores in sound elements of urban life.

The Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series for 2011-2012 concludes with a performance by Carter Brey, Cello, and Christopher O'Riley, piano, on Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Brey and O'Riley are two of the music world's most visible and admired performers. As principal cellist of the
New York Philharmonic and as an active soloist and chamber player, Brey is known to audiences around the world. Host of Public Radio's long-running program "From the Top," and acclaimed for his groundbreaking transcriptions of the songs of Radiohead and other rock artists, O'Riley is recognized as one of classical music's visionary performers and thinkers. Ed Hartt Alumnus of the Year in 1975, was a prominent television and film composer, conductor, music arranger, and television producer. Some of his most well-known work includes the theme songs to Night Court, Charlie's Angels, and Barney Miller. The Hartt School recently received a large collection of music associated with Jack's long musical career.
The Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra join forces to honor the 2012 Unclaimed Property Composer-in-Residence,
John Corigliano in a concert on Saturday, May 5, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater. The Wind Ensemble performs two works for winds by
John Corigliano, Gazebo Dances and Circus Maximus. The Orchestra also presents a work for baritone and chamber orchestra featuring Hartt Vocal Studies Division faculty member and noted baritone Robert Barefield.
