TheaterWorks in Downtown Hartford presents a gripping tale of Chicago police in A STEADY RAIN. The poetic drama runs March 25 through May 8, 2011.

A STEADY RAIN, by Keith Huff, portrays the morally ambiguous life of two cops, Joey and Denny, and provides a poetic and gritty tale of two men, like brothers, who are driven by love and loyalty, and an inner need to serve and protect. Joey and Denny are the kind of flat-footed plodders who give rise to stereotypes and public relations nightmares. These are working-class guys, partners who have known each other since Sunday school days. Now in early middle age, they have grown into very different adults. Both are looking to be promoted to detective. But while Joey does his best to improve his chances, the self-destructive Denny is devoured by anger and bitterness.

Denny is a classic good cop gone bad, while Joey is different, viewing the world through less tainted lenses. Both are profoundly flawed, exhausted and neck-deep in the daily muck of murder, rape, and addiction. Each instinctually knows he is on the verge of free falling through the cracks of society and sanity.

You can't wholly despise them because playwright Keith Huff so completely and meticulously shows, in all its ugly, brutal detail, the world that molded them. Huff writes with a haunting attention to detail. He possesses a persuasively deep understanding of what makes a Joey stick with a Denny. Just like life, it's a complex, twisted relationship that bends and turns while remaining entirely believable.

Tazewell Thompson, who staged TheaterWorks' celebrated productions of BROKE-OLOGY and GOD OF CARNAGE, directs Kyle Fabel (Joey) and Aaron Roman Weiner (Denny) in A STEADY RAIN, the third play of the company's 25th Anniversary Season.
