The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra presents a one-night-only performance on Tuesday, May 10 at Cincinnati Music Hall featuring Mary Chapin Carpenter, folk-country-pop artist.

Having previously performed at the Super Bowl, White House, and Grand Ole Opry, Ms. Carpenter brings a remarkable sound with her vocals and guitar, featuring blends of Americana, country, and soft rock. She and the Orchestra will perform selections from her orchestral album, Songs from the Movie, as well as orchestral arrangements of her other hits. The Grammy Award- winning artist became a star in the early 1990s with country hits such as "Down at the Twist and Shout," "Passionate Kisses," and "I Feel Lucky," and has since enjoyed a multi-genre career spanning decades. Vince Mendoza, who created orchestral arrangements for her songs, conducts this concert-the final Pops concert prior to Music Hall's renovation.

Mary Chapin Carpenter, vocalist/guitarist - Powerful messages and a unique mix of folk, country, and pop are just the beginnings of the life and career of Mary Chapin Carpenter. Starting off playing clubs in Washington D.C. to signing with Columbia Records as a country singer in the late 1980s, she built her career from the ground up. She was certified quadruple platinum on her album Come On Come On in 1992, selling over 4 million copies and yielding seven charting country singles in a single album. Since her early career, Carpenter has focused more on sending a message with her music rather than making something a radio hit.

New Jersey native, Carpenter moved to Washington D.C., where after graduation from Brown University, she played sets at local clubs. Here, she found opportunity to get her music to a larger platform and allow her career to skyrocket. The release of Come On Come On in 1992 led to 97 weeks on the Country Top 100 list among other recognitions. The New York Times's Karen Schoemer wrote that Carpenter had "risen through the country ranks without flash or bravado: no big hair, sequined gowns, teary performances.... Enriched with Ms. Carpenter's subtlety, Come On Come On grows stronger and prettier with every listen."

Since her days as a budding country artist, Carpenter has taken on a more political approach to her music, creating lyrics and messages that have reflected on everything from catastrophes such as the September 11th attacks and Hurricane Katrina to controversy involving The Dixie Chicks and more.

In 2014, she released an orchestral recording with Songs from the Movie and went on to perform songs from the album with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland later that year.

An incredible range of awards have been collected in Mary Chapin Carpenter's career thus far. From the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACMs), she received the awards for Top New Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist. From the Country Music Association (CMAs), she received the Female Vocalist of the Year award in subsequent years from 1992-1993. Carpetner has also received six separate Grammy awards throughout her career and is also a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

In 2016, she will be releasing another album, titled The Things That We're Made Of, featuring a recollection of her career over the last 30 years called "What Does It Mean To Travel." The album will be released on May 6th, just days before her debut with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
