Route 66 Theatre Presents Chicago Premiere of CICADA, Now thru 5/25

Route 66 Theatre Company is pleased to present the Chicago premiere of Cicada, by Jerre Dye, directed by Route 66 Theatre Company's Associate Artistic Director, Erica Weiss. This coming of age ghost story deeply rooted in the life of a small southern family on the verge of transformation plays today, April 9 - May 25, 2014 at Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N Lincoln Avenue in Chicago.

Tickets on sale Friday, February 21 at greenhousetheater.org, by calling 773.404.7336, or in person at the Greenhouse Theater Center box office. The press opening is Saturday, April 12 at 8 pm.

Cicada will feature Robert Breuler (Broadway: The Grapes of Wrath, Carousel, Death of a Salesman; Steppenwolf Ensemble Member; NBC's Chicago Fire); Josh Bywater (NBC's upcoming Crisis, ABC's Betrayal); Aaron Kirby (Luna Gale at Goodman Theatre, Jeff Award winner for Dark Play or Stories For Boys at Collaboraction); Amy Matheny (Enron at TimeLine Theatre and Float at About Face Theatre, 10-year Artistic Associate with About Face Theatre), Susan Monts-Bologna (Long Day's Journey Into Night at Eclipse Theatre, Superior Donuts at Mary-Arrchie Theatre Co.); Melissa Riemer (Moment and six other productions at Steep Theatre Co., where she is an ensemble member); Stacy Stoltz (Big Love at Strawdog Theatre Company, company member of The House Theatre and The Hypocrites); Elodie Tougne (Vigils at The Gift Theatre, and Macbeth at Chicago Shakespeare Theater) and Cecilia Wingate (Chicago, Sherlock's Last Case).

Set in rural Mississippi, Cicada tells the story of seventeen-year-old Ace and his mother Lily, who attempt to dig their way out of the past as the unrelenting July heat presses in on their lives. It's a story about letting go and shedding what is no longer necessary in a world full of secrets, ghosts and memories that hold on tight. Poetic, dynamic, lyrical and hard-hitting, this unique piece of theater sheds light on the enduring southern spirit and the ties that bind. Originally developed through Voices of the South Theatre Company in Memphis, TN, this play sings with the longing, the loss and the poetry inherent in the South.

"We are thrilled to present the Chicago premiere of this haunting, powerful play. It's not often that a southern story like this is told in Chicago", says Route 66 Artistic Director Stef Tovar. "Since presenting our hit A TWIST OF WATER and transferring it to a successful off-Broadway premiere in 2012, we've been gearing up for this moment. We've reaffirmed our commitment to developing new plays and producing in Chicago again. Together with our upcoming World Premiere of THE DOWNPOUR in the fall, CICADA is the perfect piece to begin our new residency at Greenhouse Theater Center with our first full season of new work."

Cicada won the Bryan Family Foundation Award for Dramatic Literature from the Fellowship of Southern Writers in 2011.

The production team for Cicada includes scenic and lighting design by Brian Sidney Bembridge (A Raisin in the Sun, The Normal Heart TimeLine Theatre); costumes by Alarie Hammock (A Twist of Water at Route 66 Theatre Company, Vigils at The Gift Theatre); sound design and original music by Christopher Kriz (Hedda Gabler at Writers Theatre, Turn of the Screw at First Folio); prop design by Jesse Gaffney (Appropriate at Victory Gardens); production photography by Joe Mazza at Brave Lux, Inc.; with Eva Breneman (Dialect coach), Janice Pytel (Production Manager), Corinne Kabat (Stage Manager), Matthew Bonaccorso (Assistant Stage Manager/Route 66 Company Manager) and Christopher Tiffany (Dramaturg).

Cicada is presented with support from Hear/Tell Productions, a new company committed to exploring new voices in the theatre by lending production support to immersive performance experiences that celebrate a desire for human connection. Sponsors include Chez Moi, d.luke design, Speedpro Imaging and Windy City Media Group.
