Photo Flash: CINDERELLA to Play the Lyric Opera

A whimsical, wildly colorful production of Rossini's delightful opera Cinderella opens this Sundayafternoon at Lyric Opera of Chicago, with eight performances through Friday, October 30. Performance dates areOctober 4 and 30 at 2pm, and October 7, 10, 13, 17, 23, 26 at 7:30pm. The familiar story (with a few different twists) makes it a great first opera experience. The all-star cast features Isabel Leonard as Angelina (a.k.a. Cinderella),Lawrence Brownlee (debut) as charming Prince Ramiro, Alessandro Corbelli as nasty stepfather Don Magnifico, Vito Priante (debut) as the prince's crafty servant Dandini, and Christian Van Horn as the prince's wise advisor Alidoro. The mean stepsisters Clorinda and Tisbe are played by Diana Newman and Annie Rosen(both debuts and first-year members of the Ryan Opera Center). Sir Andrew Davis conducts this opera for the first time in a new-to-Chicago production. Making their company debuts are director Joan Font, production designer Joan Guillen, lighting designer Albert Faura, choreographer Xevi Dorca, and associate director Joan Anton Rechi, all longtime collaborators from Barcelona.Michael Black is chorus master.

"This production is zany and slightly surreal, but accessible and entertaining," saysAnthony Freud, Lyric's general director. "It's a fairytale environment with primary colors and a witty, quirky design, very Spanish in its aesthetic."
