She turns it into a fairytale so the little girl can understand it better. Through soulful music and fairytale magic, we hold a mirror to the realities of love in real life."
A wonderful ensemble of professional and young actors will present the poignant and exhilarating musical, Something Like a Fairytale written by Lawrence Dandridge, at the National Black Theater Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina. A story within a story, Something Like A Fairytale follows a mother (Alyse) who decides to tell her young daughter (Nicole) the story of how she and her husband came to be together. She turns the story into a fairytale so the little girl understands it better. In the fairytale world, we meet a princess who is faced with the decision to love as her heart desires or to put the needs of her family and kingdom above her own. Something Like a Fairytale holds a mirror up to honest love, friendship and what it truly means to follow your heart.
This show not only touches on universal subjects like parental pressure, love triangles, domestic disputes, and divorce (to name a few) but it also shines light on what it means to have a fairytale ending, specifically from the African American perspective. Through music that is influenced by many genres, this show takes us on a relatable journey that bridges the gap between the version of love we all long for and the version of love most of us actually get. It's fun, it's honest, and it allows the audiences to see a piece of themselves in each character. Something Like a Fairytale was presented at the Thespis Theater Festival in the summer of 2016 and won 6 awards including Best Original Play, Best Score, and Best Director.
The Performance schedule: August 1st, Tuesday * August 2nd, Wednesday * . Showtimes are 3pm and 8pm on both days; there is a total of 4 shows all present ed at the Reese Theater and Pavillion.
