York Little Theatre will give a new meaning to "going green" as they present the musical comedy SHREK the Musical, July 18-20 and 24-27. The musical will transport audiences to a faraway kingdom that is turned upside down. Things get ugly when an unseemly ogre -not a handsome prince- shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Add a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and the result is a big mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek. Based on the Oscar winning DreamWorks film that started it all, SHREK the Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to life on stage, teaching the lesson : being different is what makes us special.

Featuring elaborate sets, lavish costumes, extensive hair and makeup and spectacular lighting effects, SHREK The Musical is this summer''s must-see family event! Susan Taylor is the makeup artist and hair stylist for the show that will include prosthetics and a number of wigs to bring our favorite fairytale characters to life. It will take Susan over and hour to complete Shrek''s makeup alone, that features prosthetics and latex applications. The stage floor is painted green for the show that features life-size trees, a castle tower and a giant dragon puppet that requires 5 handlers. Jeff Pettyjohn, lighting designer for the show, will create a variety of special effects that will transform Princess Fiona into an Ogre, create a river of hot molten lava and a fire breathing dragon.

SHREK the Musical is directed by Rene Staub. Vocal Direction is by Matt Schriver and Choreography is by Ashley Zimmerman. A cast of outstanding local talent is led by Randy Stamm, as Shrek. He is joined by Rachel Ann Morgan as Princess Fiona and Brady Bennett as Donkey. Michael Zorger shows his short side as Lord Farquaad. A variety of other misfits are played by a strong team of vocalists and dancers to complete the cast of 40.
