OSEKRE

Saturday, March 19 at 11:30 PM; $12

After arriving in New York City with 30 dollars and change in his pocket to pursue his college career, Osekre hasn't looked back. Osekre's Vibe is an unusual combination of lyricism, wit, insight and flow delivered with sweet melodic African hooks. Osekre's music is unique in that while you might catch yourself singing to a delightful African tune at his gig, you won't be completely lost in the layers of instrumentation that serve to remind every audience that New York has worn on him. Osekre's Vibe is an experience. Osekre, protégé of Kiki Djan formerly of Osibisa fame, has unlocked a global sound that has a unique local sound regardless of place and space. He performs with his band, 'The Lucky Bastards.' Caution: Do not leave your dancing shoes at home!

THIEFS
Sunday, March 20 at 7:30 PM; $14

Collectively led by drummer and vocalist Guillermo E Brown, bassist Keith Witty and saxophonist Christophe Panzani, THIEFS is a grammatically incoherent jazz bastardization. Fully acoustic to fully electronic, THIEFS weaves elements of modern composition and improvisation into a boundary-less foundation of beats. Between them, Brown, Witty and Panzani have supported artists as varied as Amel Larrieux, Anthony Braxton, Carla Bley, David S. Ware, EL-P, Jamie Lidell, Saul Williams, Somi and VIjay Iyer. As THIEFS, their experiences and influences make a hot mess in the melting pan.

THEIFS is supported by Chamber Music America and the French American Cultural Exchange's CMA/FACE French-American Jazz Exchange Program, funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The cultural services of the French Embassy, Le Bureau Export de la Musique Francaise and CulturesFrance. www.keithwitty.com

JACKIE FIVE-0H!: A CELEBRATION OF Jackie Hoffman'S FIRST 50TH BIRTHDAY
Mondays, March 14, 21 & April 4 at 7:30 PM; $30
"SAVAGELY FUNNY!" - David Rooney, The New York Times

"SENSATIONAL!" - Hilton Als, The New Yorker

"HILARIOUSLY GRUMPY" - Adam Feldman, Time Out NY

Due to popular demand and rave reviews, JACKIE FIVE-OH! has extended its run yet again at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) through April 4th. In the all-new JACKIE FIVE-OH!, the blisteringly funny, filter-free Hoffman muses on her own decay at 50, her career of playing ‘bit' parts, her thoughts about being in The Addams Family and an array of other topics running the gamut from Queen Latifah to Kristen Chenoweth. Hoffman also sings five new original songs (written with musical director Bobby Peaco). Hoffman will also continue in her hilarious, scene-stealing performance as Grandma in THE ADDAMS FAMILY into the summer.

Hilton Als in The New Yorker called JACKIE FIVE-OH! "a sensational new show" and added "why doesn't some clever producer wrap Hoffman up in a solo show on Broadway, where she belongs?" David Rooney in The New York Times called JACKIE FIVE-OH! "savagely funny" and said "Ms. Hoffman's acid-dipped acts are always a ‘gurney' worth taking." Adam Feldman in Time Out wrote, "Like cloves, a little of Jackie goes a long way. But a lot of Jackie, it turns out, can go even further-as she has proven time and again in her hilariously grumpy one-woman shows at Joe's Pub, which have won her a well-deserved cult following. JACKIE FIVE-OH! finds Hoffman in excellent form. Her robust whine gets better with age." David Sheward in Backstage wrote, "the blisteringly funny Hoffman unflinchingly skewers sacred cows such as the Tony Awards and Holocaust movies, flings acid barbs at the Broadway hierarchy, and does painfully accurate imitations of a gallery of showbiz icons."

JACKIE FIVE-OH! is written by Hoffman and Michael Schiralli, and directed by Schiralli. Musical numbers are co-written with Bobby Peaco, who is also the musical director.

Performance Schedule: Monday, March 14 at 7:30 pm; Monday, March 21 at 7:30 pm and Monday, April 4 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30. For tickets, visit www.joespub.com or call (212) 967-7555.

WORLD PARTY

Tuesday & Wednesday, March 22 & 23 at 7:30 PM; $25
"Epic pop from a cosmic dude" - Time Out

World Party? A social-democratic ideology? A good time for all? A better name than "The Karl Wallinger Band"? In the mid-eighties Wallinger walked out of cult heroes The Waterboys and launched World Party with a surprising hit album and US hit single, "Ship of Fools". Private Revolution charted in America, proving that 20th century philosophy could be set to good tunes and sell. It was never a prolific project, but through five educational and entertaining albums, World Party carried the torch for intelligent pop and outstanding live musicianship. Eclectic in every sense of the word, World Party took its leads from Beatles, Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Stones, Junior Walker, Neil Young, Prince, and made the music its own. Tonight they celebrate the release of their latest album and bonus DVD Dumbing Up. Welcome to the Future. www.worldparty.net

PEDRO MORAES

Tuesday, March 22 at 9:30 PM; $15

Critics in Bahia, the womb of the Brazilian artistic imagination, have called Pedro Moraes "the next step in Brazilian song." That step is both forward and backtracking, like so many musical throwbacks in genres from hip-hop to indie rock. In Moraes' case, he's reviving the "Musica Popular Brasileira" of the '70s and '80s, but following a meandering route to find waypoints wherever in the wide world they may be....Live on stage, Moraes contorts and cavorts like a Brazilian David Byrne with a better and blacker samba shake and James Brown glide, not to mention a more manly and mellifluous vibrato.

THE POISON TREE

Wednesday, March 23 at 9:30 PM; $14

The Poison Tree is the project of ex-King Of France frontman Steve Salett and collaborators from his self-described "Elephant 6-styled" Saltlands music collective, a group that includes folks like onetime KoF player Doveman and Dawn Landes. In a text accompanying the record, writer John Wray says "these are the songs a teenager would write, if that teenager happened to be a connoisseur of heartbreak. If that teenager could see into the future - see all the way, past the setbacks and the self-discovery and the sweetness and the terror..." I can't confirm a state like that would actually sound like the Poison Tree, but I like the description. And you do get some ragged heartbreak on "My Only Friend," a song that may remind you of Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind" before it opens up and goes elsewhere.- Stereogum
