Ladies and gentlemen, Duke Special is an artist aptly named. Dynamic, musically ambitious and bracingly eccentric, he's right on cue to charm Britain with his inimitable style and lush musicality. Hailing from Belfast with a sound that is self-confessed "hobo-chic", Duke Special - AKA the endlessly inventive Peter Wilson - is once heard, never forgotten.

A fervent performer who harks back to the pre-rock 'n roll era with dashes of Gershwin and orchestral swing, he stands on stage with a white-knuckle grasp on originality. Gloriously vintage and unlike any other artist, Duke Special is exactly that.  All tinged with a Northern Irish lilt and poetic lyrics that could feature in a modern-day fairytale, it's the perfect balance of old and new ¬ boasting the appeal of a three-minute pop song with the incessant charm of an old-school music hall.

THE EMBASSY ENSEMBLE LIVE! THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT ON: THE STUYVESANTS & Sarah White

 The Embassy Ensemble Presents is an intimate concert series featuring both new and established musical guests from around the world, backed by the blazing horns and funky rhythm section of The Embassy Ensemble.  Featuring three horns, bass, guitar, drums, and percussion, The Embassy Ensemble, has been Blitz the Ambassador's backing band for the past three years.  Now, accompanied by Blitz the Ambassador on percussion, the Embassy Ensemble step into their own spotlight, as the musical accompaniment to some of the world's best new musical talents.
 
The Stuyvesants is a collaborative effort between music producer Allan Cole (Algorythm), and record collector Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt). Both reside in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY. The two wanted to work together on a project where they could incorporate several of their talents, related to music and design. They wanted to do this under a moniker that would pay homage to the '70s. The collaboration allowed them to do four major things, design, beat dig, produce amazing music, and simply have fun.
 
Joining the musical lineage of Minnesota expatriates, and representing a new generation in progressive sound, is the infinitely talented Sarah White. Cultivating a base of followers and nurturing her sound from the ground up in her native Minneapolis, Sarah embarks on the next phase of her creativity with her pilgrimage to Brooklyn, NY. The success that has followed her to her new home in New York's most eclectic borough is a culmination of experience and preparation for a golden opportunity. The path that led to this exodus is the stuff dreams are made of. Sarah White has always been artistically inclined. As a youth she explored the worlds of theater and dance, and would become a student of music, learning to play instruments early on. Sarah's organic progression toward vocalism would begin in middle school, experimenting with spoken word poetry and rapping by the age of 14. Her collaborative abilities would be put to the test in 2002 when she joined the regional hip-hop outfit, Traditional Methods, as an emcee. Covering political and social topics in the tradition of such groups as the Fugees and Digable Planets, the group had a successful run, until Sarah decided to expand her creativity, starting a New Group called Black Blondie in 2005, with fellow vocalist Samarha Linton. Black Blondie would fuse hip-hop, electro-dub, and soul, providing glimpses into Sarah's current identity. The girl-heavy band would earn strong regional acclaim, as well as a Minnesota Music Award nod. Throughout her group efforts, Sarah Drew lofty comparisons to contemporaries and legends such as India Arie, Lauryn Hill, and Sade. While Sarah embraced all of the local acclaim, she sought to further broaden her horizons, and is currently in the Early Stages of a burgeoning solo career. Sarah White's voice can be described as hypnotic at times, with breathy, soothing soliloquies, and deep, seductive stanzas. What's impressive is her ability to effortlessly transform from singer to emcee, as in the introspective song, C Train. In this selection, she combines a spitfire flow, with dancehall style chatting and soulful melody, to create her own unique "scatois". Each of Sarah's songs is a perfectly balanced moment, reflecting the full spectrum of her vocal abilities and bringing a positive focus to the issues of growth, fulfillment, and love. Sonically, Sarah's primary producer DJ Don Cuco has presented a menu of indigenous sounds and synthesized instrumentation that perfectly complements the versatility of Sarah's voice. It's a proven formula for success as Sarah White has opened for artists such as Jill Scott, J*Davey, K-Os, Camp Lo, Amy Winehouse, Wajeed, Bobbito, Ursula Rucker, Fishbone, and The Roots, and performed at such New York staples as Smooch in Fort Greene, Solomon's Porch in Bed-Stuy, The Delancey in Manhattan, and the Apollo in Harlem. She was also featured in 2007's Black Lily Festival in Philly, and is poised to become the next post-genre fixture, much like fellow Minnesota export Nikki Jean of Philadelphia's Nouveau Riche. Sarah White has clearly found her calling, and we should all join in her commute to the top.

Recently described as "A bar of gold in the new depression" by Hilton Als in the New Yorker, singer, songwriter and Tony-nominated performance artist Justin Bond is an Obie, Bessie and Ethyl Eichelberger Award winner and was named one of the top 40 favorite New Yorkers by Time Out New York and was listed by Time Out London as one of England's 50 Funniest People.  His debut EP Pink Slip was released in July 2009. In 2008, he won rave reviews for his GLAAD nominated show Lustre which premiered at PS122 in the East Village and then went on to tour the UK with stops in Manchester, England as part of the It's Queer Up North Arts Festival and in a critically acclaimed run at London's Soho Theatre. Also in 2008, Justin appeared at The Southbank Center in London in the title role of Sinderella an original musical written by Martyn Jacques of The Tiger Lillies. In 2007, he premiered Justin Bond is Close To You, a reinterpretation of the classic Carpenter's album Close To You performed in its entirety as part of Joe's Pub in the Park in Central Park and subsequently presented by The Sydney Opera House in Australia.  He regularly Emcees the performance series Weimar New York which has played in such varied locations as the SFMOMA, The Speigeltent, and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in New York.
 
As one-half of the Performance duo Kiki and Herb, Justin has toured the world headlining at Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall and starred in successful runs on Broadway and off-Broadway.   Kiki and Herb have released two CDs,  Do You Hear What We Hear?, Kiki and Herb Will Die For You at Carnegie Hall and a DVD Kiki and Herb Live at the Knitting Factory.
 
Film credits include a starring role in John Cameron Mitchell's feature Shortbus, Charles Hermann-Wurmfeld's Fancy's Persuasion as well as Imaginary Heroes and Jon Moritsugu's Mod Fuck Explosion. In 2006 Bond completed his MA Scenography at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London. Justin credits his career as a queer performer to Kate Bornstein who cast him as Herculine Barbin in her ground-breaking play Hidden: A Gender in 1991.
 
JACKIE FIVE-0H!: A CELEBRATION OF Jackie Hoffman'S FIRST 50TH BIRTHDAY

Broadway's Jackie Hoffman, acclaimed for her hysterical scene-stealing performances in such shows as Hairspray, Xanadu and currently as 'Grandma' in The Addams Family, will bring her all-new solo show Jackie Five-Oh!: A Celebration of Jackie Hoffman's First 50th Birthday to Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) beginning Monday, November 22 for four consecutive Monday evenings.   In the all-new Jackie Five-Oh!, the blisteringly funny, filter-free Hoffman muses on her own decay, as well as about her experiences playing 'Grandma' and a host of other topics such as Haiti and Hollywood.   Hoffman will also world premiere several new musical numbers, including two that she wrote for 'Grandma'....if she were to have a solo number in The Addams Family, which of course she doesn't .....not that she's ever complained about that.
 
Hoffman's previous outings at Joe's Pub (immortalized on the CD Jackie Hoffman: Live At Joe's Pub....NOT sold in the Lunt-Fontanne lobby) have garnered a cult following, as well as critical acclaim.  Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote, "Jackie Hoffman's solo shows at Joe's Pub have become a beloved ritual.  Ms. Hoffman radiates anything but love and charity as she reviews the year in outrage, both global and personal.  And who can blame her! " Adam Feldman in Time Out wrote, "Jackie Hoffman is the funniest woman in America." 
 
Jackie Five-Oh! is written by Hoffman and Michael Schiralli, and directed by Schiralli.   Musical direction is by Bobby Peaco. Hear some of Broadway's best voices, and learn more about the critical situation elephants are facing in Southeast Asia.
