8:30PM LIAM SILLERY'S OUTSKIRTS: PHENOMENOLOGY CD RELEASE
(Liam Sillery, trumpet; Matt Blostein, alto saxophone; LanDon Knoblock, piano; Michael Bates, bass; Vinnie Sperrazza, drums)
Trumpeter Liam Sillery continues in the direction of his most recent album "Outskirts," challenging both the musicians and the listener with intricate compositions and compelling improvisation. On "Phenomenology," the band is reactive and supportive, while maintaining their individual personalities to constantly compliment the music. Liam's exploration of the sonic landscapes suggested by his compositions create a sense of melodic intrigue on the Kenny Wheeler-inspired "Koi" and the horn lines cartwheel through the backbeat of "Intentionality."
"Sillery, although influenced a little by Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Wynton Marsalis, has his own approach and displays lots of potential."

`Badenhorst plays wonderfully with the same detached warmth and cool nonchalance of a young Lee Konitz`
Jakob Baekgaard, allaboutjazz.

"[Badenhorst] combines a never-ending search for adventure, a natural direction and a warm tone into an interesting and personal story.... A wonderful storyteller..."

10PM Simon Jermyn`s Trot a Mouse

Simon Jermyn (born 1981) has played guitar and bass since a young age. Throughout his teens he studied classical guitar at The Royal Irish Academy of Music, and jazz privately with teachers Mike Nielsen and Hugh Buckley.

After a summer scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, and completion of secondary school, Simon obtained a Guildhall School of Music and Drama performance diploma at Newpark Music Centre in Dublin, before moving to The Hague for five years and earning a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance. He has also taken private lessons with some musicians including Drew Gress, Skuli Sverrisson, Hilmar Jensson, Tim Berne and Jim Black.

Since then Simon has lived in Reykjavik and New York and is currently back in Dublin.

He performs equally as an electric bassist and guitarist. His work very often also makes use of effects and electronics to sample and manipulate in real time, aswell as incorporating field recordings. Recently, he has added baritone and fretless guitars to some groups he works with.

Simon is an active composer, and writes new music for his own groups and others. His main compositional outlets have been Trot A Mouse and Awkward Silence. The music for the latter is often based around quarter tones and the idea of dividing the octave in to 24 equal parts, aswell as soundscapes, through composed forms and different rate of change happening simultaneously.

His debut album as a leader, Trot A Mouse has recently been released on the Spanish label Fresh Sound New Talent.

"The eleven compositions on Trot a Mouse display a rich and original breadth of musical and non-musical influence and suggest a considerable measure of patience and care in their creation."
The Journal of Music Ireland

"Certainly one of the most important (and listenable) releases to come out of Ireland in recent years."
Downtown Music Gallery, NYC

8:30PM RIBS & BRISKET REVUE
(Paul Shapiro, saxophone, clarinet & vocals; Cilla Owens, vocals; John-Martin Green, vocals; Dan Rosengard, piano; Booker King, bass; Morris Roberts, drums)
"Hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish."
- Jamie Renton, Straight No Chaser UK

"Mr. Shapiro, transforms the ritual of a Friday night Shabbat service into a rollicking downtown jam." - The New York Times

Shapiro's "Essen" Chosen as "Number 1 CD of 2008." - David Pulizzi, Jazziz

Woodwind player and composer Paul Shapiro, who's earned wide acclaim for his three Tzadik CDs and his dynamic performances, brings his fabled "Ribs and Brisket Revue" -an uplifting, funky-historical Harlemite Yiddish Swing band back to the famed Cornelia Street Café for their sixth straight New Year's Eve Celebration!

Paul Shapiro's Ribs and Brisket Revue' is featured on Shapiro's CD "Essen" which was released last year on John Zorn's Tzadik Records to rave reviews:

"Everything here is lively, witty, well-played and just plain excellent. And it all serves as a potent reminder that a jazz record can still be a whole mess of freewheeling fun without sacrificing a lick of intelligence or creativity."
- David Pulizzi, Jazziz

"On his new album, "Essen" (Tzadik), Shapiro explores the cultural mash-up that occurred in American popular music when Jewish music -- Yiddish theater songs, vaudeville tunes, klezmer songs and novelties -- met blues, jazz, rhythm 'n' blues and swing. The result is a collection that touches history in several ways, yet always manages to make a contemporary statement that's fun to listen to. His crack band, Paul Shapiro's Ribs and Brisket Revue, can sound like a Lower East Side wedding outfit, an R&B group, a strip club combo and a cooking funk band."
- Kirk Silsbee, The Jewish Journal, LA

"For the past few years, Paul Shapiro, a New York-based saxophonist with serious new-jazz and R&B credentials, has put a postmodern spin on Jewish musical themes, honoring the past yet never forgetting that over-the-top humor and extroverted theatricality (and culinary obsession) are grand elements of the tradition."
- Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble

*Paul was visited in a dream state by the ghost of Fats Waller who convinced him that R&B originally stood for Ribs & Brisket

(Douglas Yates, alto saxophone; Kenny Brooks, tenor saxophone; Leo Genovese, piano; Chris Lightcap, bass; Pete Zimmer, drums)
Douglas Yates and Kenny Brooks admit to being heavily influenced by their mentor/guru - saxophone master George Garzone. Natives of the San Francisco Bay Area, Yates and Brooks went to Boston in 1984 to study with Garzone - Yates at Berklee, Brooks at the New England Conservatory. Their education at the feet of the master included weekly pilgrimages to the Willow Jazz Club to hear Garzone and the Fringe. In 1989 Brooks returned to San Francisco while Yates moved to NYC.
Fast forward 18 years. Upon his arrival in NYC in 2007 Brooks reunites with Yates and Garzone in the form of Garzone's "3 Tenors" quintet, which also includes Pete Zimmer on drums and Peter Slavov on bass. Branching off from "3 Tenors" comes "In The Zone". Yates and Brooks explore the spirit of the music of George Garzone through some of his compositions as well as their own originals.
