Award-Winning Cabaret Performer and Former SWEENEY TODD Star Sarah Rice Brings Back MUSIC OF THE NIGHT to Pangea, 11/25, 7 pm

Sarah Rice first burst onto the Broadway musical theater world in 1979 as the original Johanna in Stephen Sondheim's TONY Award-winning musical Sweeney Todd. The dazzling soprano later became a cabaret star, winning a 2010 Bistro Award and 2011 MAC Award for Best Female Vocalist. After performing cabaret in almost every major venue in New York, Rice has been performing an exciting new show-MUSIC OF THE NIGHT--at the popular restaurant/club PANGEA (178 2nd Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets) and will be presenting her fourth performance at the venue on Friday, November 25 at 7 pm. In Music of the Night, Rice not only exhibits her ravishing vocals, but also performs her set of enchanting music while playing the mysterious and ethereal instrument-the Theremin. During an elegant evening to delight the senses, Rice take audiences on a musical journey of romance, longing, and the mysteries of the night, performing with the only instrument one can play without touching. Playing the Theremin-and with the incomparable Eric Sedgwick on-Rice incorporates classical music with the international songbook, movie themes, Broadway classics, and more, all exploring the human condition. Joining Sarah as a special guest vocalist is the equally ethereal-sounding David Vernon.

Rice first played the Theremin at famed Broadway director Tom O'Horgan's house about 10 years ago and has been enthralled with the instrument and its otherworldly sound ever since. This summer she was invited back again to play the Theremin at the famed Caramoor Music Festival in Katonah, NY. The New York Daily News once wrote that "Rice played the Theremin, the electronic instrument that makes all those science-fiction-movie, woo-woo sounds and she just brought the house down." Cabaret Scenes Magazine Publisher/Reviewer Peter Leavy has written that the Theremin "Is a strange and entrancing sound, like the mix of a cello, a clarinet, and a baying hound with perfect pitch that came together well as Sarah Rice played it on a duet with guitar, violin or piano. Watching Rice's hands play the instrument was captivating." Roy Sander of the BistroAwards.com has said that Rice's voice " . . . remains a ravishing instrument."

In addition to winning a 1979 Theatre World Award for her role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd, Sarah Rice won 2010 Bistro and 2011 MAC Awards for her critically acclaimed solo cabaret debut show, Sarah Rice Sings Screen Gems: Songs of Old Hollywood. Off-Broadway credits include playing Luisa in The Fantastics, Susan in The Waves, and Elizabeth in Swan Song. Rice has also performed Opera, Operetta, and Musical Theater all over the world. This October, she appeared at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Cabaret Convention's Stephen Sondheim Tribute night at the Lincoln Center.
