TOO DARN HOT: HOT PEPPER THEATER LIVE!
August 1 at 11:30PM
$20 cover charge. $45 premium seating. $20 food and beverage minimum or two drinks.

In August 2014, two crazy people had a thought: "Could theater reviews be both informative and entertaining?" The answer was "Yes!" and also "Oh god, what have we done." At the beginning of each episode of Hot Pepper Theater, a reviewer eats something incredibly spicy-usually either a pepper (habanero or hotter) or a shot of hot sauce-then attempts to review something playing in New York. Only once they have finished their review and rated the play, and pepper, on a scale of 1 to 5, may they drink milk to relieve the pain. With our first birthday coming up soon, we're leaping off the screen and onto 54 Below's stage for TOO DARN HOT: Hot Pepper Theater LIVE! And we're turning the tables: we're making the performers take the heat. Can a Broadway belter defy a Scotch Bonnet while she's Defying Gravity? Will a drop of Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce make a juggler drop his pins? How much heat turns a Durang monologue into a real Actor's Nightmare? Join us and our brave cast of guests from across the world of theater, cabaret, and burlesque as we test our mettle and spice up the night. Hot Pepper Theater is created and produced by PowerOut co-founders Todd Brian Backus and Ben Ferber. Music Direction by Ian Axness. Co-Produced by David Levy. With mad props to our inspiration, Hot Pepper Gaming. Featuring: Ellie Frances (Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolic), Kevin R. Free (Welcome to Nightvale), Vince Gatton (New York Shakespeare Exchange) and Evan Maltby (Kapow-i Go-Go).

Not only will Evan sing his favorite rock and musical theatre songs, but he will be debuting some of his own songs from his new original musical he has been working on called "My Champagne Year." Evan Ruggiero began dancing at the age of 5 in his hometown studio and by age 10, he was accepted into the famed New Jersey Tap Ensemble, under the direction of Ms. Deborah Mitchell. He soon graced the stages of Lincoln Center, The Shomberg Museum of Harlem and The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, among others. Upon entering his sophomore year at Montclair State University while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, Evan was suddenly diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer of the right leg. Enduring nine surgeries in a six-month period in an effort to save the leg, the cancer returned more aggressively than the original diagnosis. He was faced with the ultimate decision of amputation in order to stop the cancer and save his life, as well as undergoing chemotherapy for 16 months. In spite of the physical setback, Evan held close to the dream of dancing and learned of the famed Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates, a legendary African-American entertainer who taught himself to tap dance after losing a leg in a cotton gin accident at the age of 12. Bates performed twice for the King and Queen of England and became a regular on The Ed Sullivan Show appearing a record 58 times. Inspired by his story, Evan aspired to passing on his legacy. Within eighteen months after the amputation, and only two days after receiving his "peg-leg," Evan was tapping again. He has appeared with the St. Louis Tap Festival, LA Tap Festival, Jersey Tap Festival, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, on American Idol, has been a guest on The Ellen Show, on Telemundo's Un Nuevo Dia, and most recently made his first international appearance on Italy's hit television showQuelli Che il Calcio.

Laura Dean made her New York City Opera debut at 10 years old, but this is the first solo cabaret show of her career. With a mix of pop, rock and show tunes, she maps her journeys as an actor, a mother and a wife, and how those paths can cross. The music spans genres and decades, with songs by David Shire, Michael Gore, Pat Benatar, Elizabeth Swados, Freddie Mercury and more composers both new and known. A graduate of the High School of performing Arts, she's known for her film and TV work - Lisa, (the dancer who almost jumps in front of a subway) in Fame, Sophie (Rachel's Bloomindale's co-worker) on Friends, and Chicago - as well as Broadway. She played Mrs. Walker in The Who's Tommy and won the Theater World Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her role as Boopsie in Doonesbury.

Join Rita Rudner for her 54 Below debut! A house-filling favorite in Las Vegas since she opened in June 2000, Rudner is known for her epigrammatic one-liners. Rita Rudner moved to New York at the age of fifteen to become a dancer on Broadway. She appeared in several shows, including the original productions of Folliesand Mack and Mabel. It was while in Annie on Broadway that she began exploring the comedy clubs of Manhattan. In the early '80s, Rudner took a full-time leap from chorus lines to punch lines and was soon a regular guest on both Late Night With David Letterman and The Tonight Show. Rita's first solo HBO special, Rita Rudner's One Night Stand, was nominated for several awards, as was her eponymous English BBC television show that later appeared in the USA on A&E. Rudner's two one-hour specials for HBO filled Carnegie Hall in New York three times and the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles twice. In 2008, Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas was PBS's first ever stand-up comedy special. Rudner is a frequent collaborator with her writer/producer husband of twenty six years, Martin Bergman. The couple's first play - Room 776 - ran as part of the 2008 season of the Las Vegas Little Theatre. Their second play, based on Rita's first novel Tickled Pink, premiered at the Laguna Playhouse in April 2012.
