Welcome to BWW Movies World's new daily ON THIS DAY series celebrating film openings and special events that took place on this day in cinematic history!

On December 2, 1988, THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF HTE POLICE SQUAD! was released in theaters. The commercially and critically successful film, starring the late Leslie Nielsen, was based upon the extremely short-lived ABC comedy POLICE SQUAD! from 1982.

AIRPLANE's Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker and David Zucker revived POLICE SQUAD! for Paramount, featuring Nielsen's clumsy cop, Lt. Frank Drebin in what would become THE NAKED GUN series. The film also starred George Kennedy, Priscilla Presley and O.J. Simpson.

THE NAKED GUN earned $80 million at the box office, and spawned two sequels in the 1990s - which Nielsen starred in.
