Deadline has announced that Lucy Alibar, co-writer of THE BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, has signed on to join acclaimed director/producer Guillermo Del Toro for an upcoming interpretation of THE SECRET GARDEN. Del Toro will not direct - but will produce alongside Mark Johnson for Universal.

Based upon Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel, THE SECRET GARDEN has been adapted many times over, including the stage musical and 1993 film. In this version, the classic tale of the young girl sent to live with her reclusive uncle will be set in the American South in the early 20th century, the site reports.

BEASTS OF THE SOURTHERN WILD marked Alibar's debut feature film, which she co-wrote with Benh Zeitlin, who directed. The film is based upon Alibar's own play, JUICY AND DELICIOUS.

Del Toro has made a name for himself in the film industry due to his work on such movies as HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH, and MIMIC. His next film, PACIFIC RIM, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and DIEGO KLATTENHOFF, will arrive in theaters on July 12, 2013.
