UNHEARD VOICES FOR THE AMERICAN THEATER Continues 6/25

New Haarlem Arts Theatre continues its series, "Unheard Voices for the American Theater." In this series, our new professional theater company at CCNY facilitates new and established writers in experimenting, imagining and creating theater for the new century that speaks to our shared history and the changing demographics of America.

"Clean and Press" by Corwin Moore, directed by Eugene Nesmith
Two cops face a suspect with blood on his hands. As the suspect negotiates a path through his interrogation, the story of his family is revealed as well as the secrets that threaten to explode his past and his present. "Clean and Press" is a modern day drama that explores the dynamics of family relations, the impact of the lost of a mother on a family, and how trafficking in drugs can destroy a man's dreams and families ties.

The cast includes Reginald L. Wilson, Dennis Jordan, Wayne Willinger, Teniece Johnson and Carlos Alejandro.

Corwin Moore (playwright) is an Emmy Nominated comedian, writer and producer who has established himself as one of the leading voices of cutting-edge humor in television today. During his tenure as a writer for NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” he collaborated with Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and Fred Armisen and during his final season there, he received the Emmy Nomination for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Program.” Other writing and consulting credits include VH1’s “Hip-Hop Honors”, MTV’s “Osborne’s Christmas Special”, Spike TV’s “Guys Choice Awards” and the literary best seller “I’m The New Black” by Tracy Morgan. As a Comedic Actor, he has appeared on CNN’s series “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News,” “Family Matters” and “Dangerous Minds.” Mr. Moore began his TV career as a writer and cast member of the syndicated sketch variety show, “Uptown Comedy Club,” that also launched the careers of Jim Breuer and Tracy Morgan. His films range from from, “Race,” starring Paul Rodriguez, to “Juice,” starring Omar Epps and Tupac Shakur. As a Stand Up Comedian Mr. Moore has been the opening act for Tracy Morgan across the country at venues such as Caroline's on Broadway, The Mohegan Sun Casino, Foxwoods Casino and on her HBO special, “Black and Blue.”

Eugene Nesmith (director) is Founding Artistic Director of NHAT and the Chair of CCNY's Theatre Department. For years he was a member of New York Theatre Workshop's Usual Suspects Group. He was selected to be a member of Lincoln Center’s first Directors Lab. Most recently, he was selected to be a member of ATHE's Theatre Leadership Institute. Mr. Nesmith has directed various productions at regional theaters and Off Off-Broadway theaters in New York City. He has published critical essays in The Village Voice and in such scholarly journals as Yale Theater, American Theatre Magazine, and Black Theatre News. His critical writings can also be found in such book length projects as "A Source Book on Black Performance," edited by Anna Marie Bean, and "Black Comedy," edited by Pamela Faith Jackson. He has been a judge for The Village Voice Obie Awards and a panelist for the Theater Grants and Policy Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts. As an actor he has performed in various roles Off Broadway and in Regional Theaters, in such roles as Brutus in "Julius Caesar" with Shakespeare and Company, Aaron in "Titus Andronicus" with Target Margin Theater and Baylen in "Glenn Garry Glen Ross" for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. In 1993, Mr. Nesmith was co-founder with Victoria Norman of The African-American Theatre Program at the University of Louisville. He directed NHAT's current production of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" by August Wilson, which opened June 14 and runs through July 8.
