New York City used to have the largest oyster population in the world, but it was decimated by overharvesting and pollution. Now, the humble oyster is being promoted as a defense against future storms. Reporter Rick Karr visits the Bronx River where volunteers check up on their recently-planted oyster beds. And Kate Orff, founder of SCAPE, which was one of the winners of HUD's Rebuild by Design challenge, joins anchor Jack Ford to talk about plans to build oyster reefs to protect Staten Island.

Award-winning author and historian Donald L. Miller tells host Rafael Pi Roman how New York became, in the words of Duke Ellington, "The capital of everything." Miller's new book is
Supreme City: How Jazz Age MANHATTAN Gave Birth to Modern America.

Singer and actress Bette Midler founded the New York Restoration Project in 1995 and a solution to vacant lots and limited green space was born. NYRP's mission is to create beautiful, public outdoor spaces, and this summer, the organization partnered with the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Bronx Museum of the Arts to create Arts in the Gardens, a series of free programs including a music festival and dance workshops.

And when the 2014 USA Special Olympics were held in New Jersey in June, NJTV News' Lauren Wanko was there from start to finish. Wanko brings us the inspiring story of the more than 3,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities and the volunteer coaches who make the games possible.
